John Deere 317 Latest addition

Got a call this morning. Told to expect 5 tons of wood pellets on Thursday. Every thing went on hold while I prepare for that. Had a truck to unload at the food bank at 1:30. Got that done came home and make dinner. Salad, lettuce onion tomato kale chopped dates sunflower seeds habanero ghost pepper jack cheese with jalapeno ranch dressing. Then about 5 I got outside to try the acid on the crank shaft. 99 degrees in the shade nice breeze. Took a box of soda and a gallon milk jug full of water with about 4 table spoons of soda. Just in case I did something ignorant. Used an acid brush to apply the acid. Just kept dabbing on the muratic acid until it quit bubbling. Used a wire detail brush to scrub. In less than an hour the acid quit reacting. Dumped the soda water over the crank then flushed it with a hose. Dried it off with paper towels and applied oil. When I got done it miked out like new. crank 002.jpgcrank 003.jpgcrank 004.jpgcrank 005.jpgcrank 006.jpgcrank 007.jpg Haven't found any grocus cloth. What grade would you recommend. I can still detect some roughness with my thumb nail. I will try the crocus cloth then decide if I need to take it to town for a polish. What do you think. Don

Been looking for crocus cloth. Found military speck for crocus cloth. Specifies cotton cloth impregnated with jewelers rouge. every thing i find is aluminum oxide. Finest I finest local is 600 grit. I have 320 grit emery on hand. other than the military speck crocus cloth seems to be treated as a generic term. I have a stick of jewelers rouge and an old cotton sheet. Just don't know how to impregnate it. Don

Don, you can use 3,000 grit or finer just don't polish very long with it. 3m makes a 7,000 grit but I don't know if you can find it locally. Do you have any parts stores that handle a lot of automotive paint supplies, they should have really fine grit wet or dry.

7000 I can go to the auto paint supply shop and check. Do you suppose they will call it crocus or will it be wet dry paper? Was cruising craigslist earlier and spotted a Sears 16/6. loaded up and went and got it. Do you suppose the 16 horse would bolt in there and at least give me the opportunity to test the rest of the 317 and see what I have. Haven't taken any pictures yet. It is still setting in the truck. Po says it needs a battery and the carb cleaned. Came home in the dark so will have to wait till tomorrow to check it out. Don

Hey Don, I don't know if it will or not, isn't it a Techy in the Sears?

I know the 317 frame is a lot different in how the engine mounts are positioned compared to the 300/316 Kohler JD. I have both.
Nope It is an Onan, About 75 or 76 model. 16 hp, points, and I believe fuel pump built into the carb. I will check it out more soon. Don

@olcowhand

Daniel, do you know the mounting difference between the BF-MS and the P-218 Onans? I was thinking I read somewhere that the crank hieght is different between the 2 models. Don wants to install the BF to check out the rest of 317 hydro and such.
I sure don't, but tomorrow I could check, as I have a BF in the barn loft, and I believe I have a P220 block.

I did a BF repower into Fred's 317 he used to have. Only issue was I had to fab up a new driveshaft, as the OE u-joints were shot. We just bolted the BF right onto the original engine mount, but can't remember if we had to drill any new holes. That's been several years.

I got time this afternoon to check out the engine in the 16/6 and asses the tractor a little more. the oil is a Little dark but not bad. Fuel tank empty. fuel Filter and lines all need replaced. hooked up a gravity feed line to the carb and it leaked gas all over the top of the engine. Used the compressor to clean the rats nests out of the cooling fins and shrouds. managed to get the float bowl full So I dried out the top of the engine and started it up. It ran for about 30 seconds and sounded relatively good. No knocks or obnoxious noise. The plastic center piece of the fuel pump is broken that seems to be the cause of the fuel leak. One front tire is garbage the other three seem usable. It didn't smoke but only running for 30 seconds that dosn't mean much. I may try to repair the plastic piece with JB weld. Have to go to town tomorrow so I can look for 7000 grit paper and JB weld. I have fire wood to get in the shed. Wood pellets to get in the shed. Ill be so busy Ill be running of in all directions at once but I wont be bored. Don
