John Deere 317 Latest addition

Don, you can use 3,000 grit or finer just don't polish very long with it. 3m makes a 7,000 grit but I don't know if you can find it locally. Do you have any parts stores that handle a lot of automotive paint supplies, they should have really fine grit wet or dry.
Searched Spokane all day yesterday. Auto shops, paint supply, machine shops, performance engine builder. Best I could come up with is 2500 grit wet dry. Would this work with oil and a very light touch. Mention 7000 grit and they start looking around for the people with the butterfly nets coming to retrieve you. Don

Been working on the Onan 16 hp on my newly acquired sears 16/6 today. It has the carb with the built in fuel pump. The upper inlet on the fuel pump was broken of. Some one in the past had put some sort of glue like substance on it to try to seal it up but it leaked terribly. I removed the fuel pump from the carb and started to clean it up in preparation for an attempted repair with a JB Weld epoxy that is advertised as a fuel tank repair. While cleaning the entire upper right corner of the plastic piece of the fuel pump with the inlets and read valves broke of. I put the broken off piece back in place. tied it with thread and laid the assembly on a glass plate. Then mixed the JB Weld and packed the upper right chamber of the assembly with the mix. that was about 10;00 this morning. At around 3;00 this afternoon I managed to get back to it. used a knife , sandpaper, a file, and a diamond hone to dress and clean it up. Re assembled and tested for leaks with a gravity fed hose. No leaks so I fired it up. It ran fair and pulled the gas out of the hose so I felt it might work. Hooked the fuel line and filter back up and put a gallon of gas in the tank Used a small hose to blow into and pressurize the tank and fill the filter, line and float bowl. Fired it up and it sounded good. Got on for a ride around the yard and made it about 10 feet and died. I tried the same procedure several times with very similar results then noticed a wet spot on the filter. When the pump tried to suck fuel it just sucked air. I found another filter that wasn't leaking. Mixed a carb cleaner in with the gallon of gas in the tank ran it for a while at idle. Idle sounded good but it didn't respond well to the governor. I turned the high speed needle out a 1/4 turn and all seams good. Don

Don, you can use the 2500 grit paper with no issues. Yes, just use some oil or even WD40 and oil. You can also tear a ribbon of sandpaper off the side of the sheet the width of the journals and rub it together on it's self to dull the cutting edges down. It won't cut in near as bad if you do that first. I keep a few pieces of used wet or dry around just for that purpose.

Glad you got the Sears Onan fired up and it's running good. It will make a good engine for the JD if you decide to go that route.
