Last week when mowing with Country Squire

I was mowing with the CS when suddenly some not so good sounds came from the engine and it stopped, dragged it in to the shop, removed the spark plug and found the ground electrode was hammered tight against the center electrode I could tell this was not good. So this afternoon I removed the hood then the head and I'm pretty sure I found the problem what do you guys think

Bummer, I’m sorry to hear and definitely see that.

there are no aftermarket part and NOS part are expensive

Double bummer, I hope you will figure something out

Work has been slow on the engine install as my shoulders have been off the chart with pain went to the Doc last Wednesday and had a cortisone shot about Friday I could feel it starting to give me relief, everyday it gets better, today I felt pretty good and went in and worked on the Country Squire some I was having trouble with getting the hood to fit/install figured out what the problem was. The starter/gen belt on this engine is a bit longer and requires the starter/gen to be raised more to tighten the belt and it was hitting the cut in the hood and not letting the hood line up. Used the side arm grinder and removed some material so hopefully it will fit will see in the morning

I'm sure you must have a good reason but why not a shorter belt? Sorry if I missed something in your post.
Good to hear your getting some relief from the pain.
Because I would have to pull the engine out to get at it the belt has to come out & go in around the clutch assy, if I have to go that way I'll go with a link belt

Had a good afternoon, got the OEM muffler pipe out of the block, its a short fart couldn't get the piper wrench on it good but did manage to wrap on the wrench handle 10-12 times couldn't get a real good hit couldn't tell that it moved, the pipe has a flange with 2 1/2" tapped bolt holes got a couple of short 5/16ths bolts run them in so just the threads were coming thru got my long pry bar and got it against the bolts and gave the bar a good push and the pipe turned and got it out, I think the hitting the wrench handle acted like and impact wrench and broke it loose a bit, so that was good. Then I worked on installing the hood and I got it on its a tight fit but its on. Installed the muffler on temporarily connected the battery positive cable and gave it a try it started up the generator gens, it was a good afternoon. Tomorrow its to install the mag switch wire, connect the lights and install the choke cable, install the front PTO pulley, and the airfilter assy, you can see in picture 4 how close the hood cutout is to the starter/gen

Looks like you saved it Gary...to good of a tractor not to fit her up..

The large cut out in your hood above the air cleaner...is the factory ?
Yes the early oil bath cleaners needed that cut out, the early Country Squires had a tall oil bath air cleaner that extended above the hood, those were on the B&S Model 23 which had a slightly smaller carb then this Model 24xxx engine. For right now I'll install the paper cartridge filter and will be working on an extension tube for the air cleaner as I like the filter sticking above the hood, first picture is the extended filter the 2nd picture is the OEM short set up

Glad you are having some lower pain days now Gary! You are gaining ground for sure. It's always a good day when the "generator gens"!

Oh… I thought it was an extra large cupholder :D;). Nice job on the install Gary, it looks like it was meant for it. Nobody would even know the difference unless you said somethin, or if their a diehard Economy expert.

Made some progress this afternoon, got the front PTO pulley installed, ran the 1" tap into the exhaust port on the engine and cleaned the threads on the pipe nipple coated the threads with anti-seize and threaded into the engine got lined up right and installed the muffler. Installed the cartridge airfiler assy, got the choke cable installed and working like it should that ended up being more work then I figured on, ended up cutting it off 3 times before it fit right I didn't want to cut off to much so took my time and cut about 1" at a time. Tomorrow its to connect the mag switch wire and connect the headlights & tail light wires.

Got the wiring finished today tractor has headlights & a tail light, got the mag switch wired, got the air filter installed had to do some grinding on the hood edge to get the cover to fit right and its installed. So it was time to fire it up and take it outside for a test drive, opened the shop door drove out got about 70 feet and it stopped tried to restart nothing looked it over then the light came, on check the gas tank sure enough it was empty put gas in the tank and it started right up. drove it around, it ran nice and smooth seemed to have good power, it was time to head home so put back in the shop and went home with a smile

Good news, Gary! Always a good feeling when a project fires up, runs and drives. I've done that lots of times thinking the worst when the engine dies, only to find out I forgot to add gas!

One is always nervous when firing an engine up for the first time after major work. Have a IH 782 with a rebuilt engine +.030 that has only ran about 10 min. Veen wanting to get it out and run it for a while but has not happened yet.

Hi Bill I think I mistook your question about the hole in the hood top and no its not factory it was cut in for access to the spark plug, the OEM hood was solid and you had to remove it to remove the spark plug and its a PITA to remove and reinstall so many got left off. The PO cut the hole and I installed the trim

Today I worked on the CS fine tuning the carb installed a digital tach hourmeter, fine tuned the carb set the idle R's and the max R's and its running nice and smooth took it out for a little test ride and it was a good time.

Glad you had fun test driving the CS, Gary! Nice work getting it going again!
