Looking at a Yanmar YM1510 D

Went and looked at this Yanmar YM1510 D today. They said they can't get it to run, but it does turn over. It also has a broken upper lift arm on the 3 pt and possibly something wrong with the front drive system. We will know more if and when we bring it home.

Did some research last night and found several forums talking about front axle parts are hard to come bye. Hopefully we can find used parts if the front axle does have a problem.

After days of trying to get this thing started and getting nothing but a pop or 2 with some smoke, we finally got it fired up. After some research I found these have what is called a Thermostart plug rather than glow plugs. When I checked for power at the terminal I got nothing. I traced power to a bullet connector but not through it. Pulled it apart, cleaned the greenish corrosion off and got power. When it fired up it ran a little rough with some white smoke , but smoothed out and cleaned up quickly.
 
In a nut shell..
When the thermo start is powered a element glows red, the heat opens a valve, diesel fuel drips on the coil and ignites on fire.
This warms the intake air and the flame is drawn into the cylinders when cranking over.
Normally not needed when temperatures are more than 40 degrees +/-. Your mileage may vary. They do work good and help a lot.
Good to hear you got it fired up. They're good tractors..
 
After running it a bit we found the charging system and hydraulics aren't working. I think the VR is bad because the alternator is putting out 33 volts AC. I checked the fluid level for the trans/hydraulic and it is good. Pulled the filter and it looks plugged. The new filter should be here tomorrow. Also has a bad looking hose going to the pump.

Yep, so far its in better shape than we expected considering it sat for years. Now its time to look into the front axle. We had it jacked up and the right axle/spindle has quite a bit of slop in it with grease or lube leaking out. I need to get it in the shop or under cover somewhere to tear it down. This might be where the money has to be spent.
