I think alot of these "auction" companies should be investigated. I hear this again and again. they scam alot if families out of their valuables, little advertising and have their buddies show up to buy and to not bid over each other, then they all resell it later.
I will give you guys my opinion on the auctioneers they are churning out now days {1} they all suck,,Get the oldest auctioneer you can find in YOUR area.Out of the area auctioneers cannot draw the crowd a local one can and the wont get the prices a local one will.(2)Go to a few auctions of theirs to see what they actually do,How they set it up ,Is the sale easy to locate items or is it in a mound on a trailer or pallets on the ground,The new way of auctioneering is to get with the family ,Get the sale ,Advertise and show up the day of the sale with a "crew",Sell it and charge 25 to 35% and go on to the next one.The family does all the work trying to get something like a sale together and it is a dismal failure because they dont even know what will sell for anything so everything goes for nothing,The auction company should come in a few days prior to the sale with boxes and tables and trailers and 2 to 4 workers experienced in auction set up to get your sale ready,These workers should be or like myself and my wife, Appraisers. Also at least 1 should be a ring man for the sale,That way someone can lay out the sale for speed of sale and the value of the sale.I am an appraiser and professional ringman and auctioneer. My wife is an appraiser and professional ringman and clerk.(3) If the "Auctioneer "looks over your sale and offers to just buy it all then he will sell it later ,RUN AWAY.You are losing 50 to 75% of the value as soon as you agree to it,He is not "Helping you out"in any way shape or form.He simply see"s $$$$$$ ,The same goes if they want to buy an item prior to the sale because it will not sell well here,Its $$$ for him not you.$ I will tell you to expect to pay $1,500 or a little more for advertising,That is in the loal papers that will cover a circle of 150 miles from your sale and you expect to see it online at NO additional cost and that will also cover COLORED sale bills to disperse .On an average house hold sale with a good line of tools and yard equipment expect to pay a commission of up to 35% for a top of the line crew with an average of 10 to 20% on everything except vehicles and other titled assets over $5,000 They should average 10 % and real estate Average on that is 3 to 10% depending on the value,The more its worth the less of a commission should be charged,(4)Do NOT use an auctioneer who uses a buyers premium. That only hurts your sale and puts more $$$ in the auctioneers pocket,It hurts your sale because people dont like to pay that so quite a few folks wont come.(5 )This is a big one here,Get it ALL in writing,If the auctioneer doesnt have a contract you both sign prior to the sale laying out ALL the services and All the expenses right down to the porta pots, DO NOT USE THEM,Find a real auctioneer,A businessman! And remember to NEGOTIATE your sale with them,The commission in most sales does not go to anyone but the AUCTIONEER and that is a percentage on the sale total before expenses,You will pay for extra auctioneers and all ringman ,All clerks All cashiers and the porta pots and the advertising what ever that ends out costing.Percentages can be negotiated and should be.(5)Make sure they have a quality food service or can get one,DO NOT use social groups,(Churches ,4 H ,Girl scouts ect)Nothing against them but they are not insured and are not certified in food handleing and make people sick. This can get you sued believe it or not! Also they always run out of food and drinks,This simple thing can KILL a sale on a hot or cool day,Ask to see the food service guys menu and expect them or better yet demand their trailer is there and in place the day prior to the sale,This should be no problem for a reputelbe food service and worries you less for sale day.
Sorry so long and maybe uninteresting but I wanted to throw it out there,You wouldnt believe all there is to haveing an auction. I hate seeing people screwed over by auctioneer wanna bees,I told you guys a while ago I was thinking of getting out of the auction business,DECEMBER 8 is my and my wifes last auction,We are retireing if you will from that life and concentrating on our own businesses,(Small engine shop and thrift store),I will still ring or auctioneer if another auctioneer needs help once and awhile but am glad to be getting out of it,We will be regular auction goers because our businesses require it but that is a lot different than working a sale!
