What Zero Turn Mower Would You Recommend???

I will be following this topic. I currently have a hustler raptor SD 54 inch cut. I like the mower with the exception of this spring has been very wet here and the grass has been very thick and tall in between mowings. Now I help a good friend of mine Mo for customers and we only mow yards once a week so the option of mowing more often for me is not a possibility. I have found though that the mower in thick grass clogs up on the two left hand blades and let's a wind row of cut material that does not clean out of the deck because it ends up clogging up under the deck. I am looking for different options at the moment myself and have come across either a Scag Freedom Z or a bad boy ZT Elite. They are both residential grade mowers but have some commercial grade features like the way the deck is designed as a more commercial grade mower. I am really leaning towards the bad boy ZT Elite with a 54 inch cut and a Kohler engine. What I really like about them is that the deck is built like a commercial with a white shoot but also has a very deep designed to allow more airflow. Not trying to hijack your thread but it is an idea that I have to look at and maybe it's a brand that you have close by as well. Anyone have any good or bad about them to say. I must say we have a ferris at work and I'm not a fan at all. I like my buddies hustler X one but it has the commercial style deck on it. Again sorry if I'm hijacking you're thread.

No worries about thread hijacking, we are all here for the same thing.

I don't know your mom but I know my mom(who can drive a stick shift as good as anyone, and has no problem on a regular tractor) would find it difficult to safely operate a zero turn(even more so with the lap bars)

My mom ran a paddle wheel scraper for many many years out of high school, she was one of the best around!, also ran a dozer off and on when needed. She also can drive a stick shift easily and traveled the country when she was young with a stick shift ( '73 VW bug). I wouldn't think she would have any issues running a ZTR mower (I hope at least)

I like the Grasshopper/Woods machines.
I have a Woods 6210 bought in 1997 new. Has as Kawasaki liquid cooled 2 cylinder motor. Close to a 1000 hours and never any problems to speak of. Still has all the original belts..

The Cub RZT models have thin decks. Nieghbor has one and I had to get the rings to stiffen the spindle mounts as one broke loose!

Thanks for everyone info.

I forgot to put Cub Cadet on my will not buy list, sorry but I have had bad experiences with MTD Cub Cadets.
John Deere always seems expensive and parts are pricey. The company is also a hole and I have never liked JD.

I'm probably going to end up with a Hustler, there are a LOT of them around since they are made about 30 miles away. But I will see what's available when I get my JD 420 sold.

My price range is probably going to be around $2500, I'm not going to be able to afford anything new and if it's new for that price then It's probably not going to be the quality I'm looking for.

I've also been looking into Grasshoppers, they are nice because you can mow under things easier, but I also don't like their long back end, seems to be it would be easy to swing it into things???.

There is a Derby mower on Craigslist in my area, it is 54", has just under 500hrs, comes with a 3 bag catcher which I don't need. It's a nice solid looking mower, asking price is $2500.

Thanks again for the info, I'll keep everyone posted

Your decision, but I’m still staying with the cubs. On,y the commercial ones though, cut at a out 11/12 mph max, with a 54-60 inch deck just my opinion, as we have sold cubs for 25 years and the cub cadet tanks are Great, same with the newer ones

Anything rear discharge will not collect grass as well that a rear collect mower.

Dixie Chopper is the main commercial grade mower around here. Neighbor farmer bought one several years ago and it gets the crap run out of it all season long. Has 6 or 7 farm places it mows including about 5 A for his folks and 3 for him. As far as I know it has never let him down. Don't know how many hours is one it but has to be a bunch. Personally I don't care for the zero turns. Had one and had to much problem with rings around all the trees, shrubs and bushes from that inside wheel slip. I mow with a 1512 Cub Cadet diesel and 50" deck. The wider the deck the bigger the chance of uneven cut grass due to ground unevenness. The reason for belt problems with Cub Cadets is people try to run parts store belts on them. FHP belts will not last on any set up with a mule drive.

I don't care for zero turns at all, and likely will never own one. I like a steering wheel, plus some steep areas I mow are way too dangerous with them.

The cubs we sell have a steering wheel, they are wide, and are low to the ground,o be,I’ve the max angle they say is 25 degrees,p but we have had them much steeper

What about s husqvarna automower? They’re really good, leading competitor world wide, better than deere, Honda etc.
You should research them maybe, we have one in our steep top garden, we lent it out to a customer so appearance has decreased, but still good. When it’s on it’s a rand9m path inside the guide wire. Maybe you should look at them? 3 year warranty

Look around enough and you can find a nice used unit for that price. I just sold off my dad's one-owner 2008 Kubota ZG20 with 470 hours in perfect working condition for $2000. That was the "I'm ready to get this thing out of my garage and mom needs cash for a new deck" price but there are still some nice deals out there for 2-3K.

I second the idea of a steering wheel type, they are so much easier and comfortable to drive.... but they are not nearly as common. So good luck on that.

There is to much to mow here, it's 3 acres but only about 1-1/2 acres will be mowed. There are some weeds on the property where that mower would go into and never come back out

There aren't a whole lot of Kubota zero turn mowers around here, the only one's that I'm finding are big and most are diesel for around 6K.
But I will still keep a eye out

OK, I got it now, your referring to the hours, sorry I didn't get it at first.
Thanks

Does the JD 420 have power steering, and a 60” deck. If so, why not use it. Would be easy to drive and stable. Not sure about getting on and off of it.
Would save a lot of thinkin and wondering. And you already have it.
Just a thought.

The 420 is just hard enough to get on and off of, although the power steering is insanely nice and the 60" deck really makes things quick!. Also it seems like a wast to use a garden tractor with 3-pt, real blade, front hydraulic blade, 3-pt cultivator and ect for just mowing. My mom would never use any of the attachments because they are a hassle to get mounted.
