My oldest daughter was given a Allis pedal tractor when she was 3 yrs old and became a fan of Allis Chalmers tractors. She has been after me for the past few years to restore an Allis garden tractor for her. Saturday at a consignment auction I bought a AC 310 with a tiller and deck to restore.IMG_20250614_133023812_HDR.jpgi pulled off the seat pan and hood today so I can pressure wash it tomorrow. It has some rust issues and mechanical issues. I plan on stripping it all the way down, redo, repair and repaint. The hardest part is going to be keeping it a secret from her.

Hydro or shuttle shift? My uncle HAD a 314 hydro, till he blew the diff in it trying to pull a big pine log with it. Told him he should have waited till I came up and got my JD 420 out, have it setup as a mini skidder/forklift on the rear.

Ok she's adult daughter with a professional job, Ted! I thought maybe a high schooler or something. Hope this becomes a full build thread!

Loree's aunt was a traveling hospice RN for a long time. She was always on the run since things are so rural it's a long ways between patients. She was only retired about 8 years when her husband died leaving her to run a 300+ head cattle operation. Thanks to her son and one hired cowboy she does have good hands at least! That's been about 5 or 6 years ago now.

I can't believe the belt size going to the transmission from the 90degree gear box. Looks like one off of a combine. IMG_20250617_170115748_HDR.jpgI did give it a bath to get part of the grease offIMG_20250617_170122733.jpgI then pulled some side panels off and the gas tank.IMG_20250617_180322929_HDR.jpgIMG_20250617_180352920_HDR.jpg The wiring needs redone, the linear actuator for the lift wants to work but just makes a ratchting noise. Will have to remove it to see what the issue is. There is a bar in wiring that I don't know if it is factory or somebody's add onIMG_20250617_180343729_HDR.jpg

I'm not seeing anything that looks like a variable speed pulley, Ted? That setup with the big belt looks more like a torque converter than a variable speed pulley. They do a similar thing but sure is a lot different than the MF's. I think the JD 100 variator is more like the MF ones than this setup too! The more modern MTD I call the mobility scooter uses a variator similar to the MF also. It is mounted horizontally at the transaxle though.

Going to learn a lot on this thread!

This is similar to a drive on snowmobile or golf cart, but a arm changes the pulley sheeve width vs speed. The outside arm is what moves in or out with the control, to speed up or slow down.

I have always called those setups torque converters. We used to buy go kart parts from a snowmobile junkyard and that's what the yard owner called that setup on them. Of course lots of mini bikes had the Comet Torque converter like them. That's where I got the name for those 2 pulley setups. Difference is that the arm mechanically can change ratio and converters just change ratio through the rpm band then!

I know I'm stating the obvious but if I type it, then it gets though my thick head better---LOL!

Definitely something new to me on this tractor, Ted!

I did make some progress after work today. I pulled the engine out.IMG_20250618_183159903_HDR.jpg I am not going to work on getting it running due to having a fresh rebuilt k241 on my engine stand, even the oil dipstick is the same style.
I the was able to get the steering wheel off and the center section of the dash removed.IMG_20250617_180352920_HDR.jpgIMG_20250618_183154554.jpgIMG_20250618_183138122_HDR.jpgIMG_20250618_183145741.jpgThe shaft that lifts up the implements seems to be frozen up in the cross bar on the frame. That is probably why the accuator does want to move.

Some progress made today, just didn't have the camera with me. I removed the steering column and the linear actuator. I did test the actuator with a jump box and it still works. I removed the arm that the actuator connects for lifting and lowering attachments, the wear part underneath was bone dry. Looks like no one ever got underneath the tractor to put grease in the fitting for it. The arm it attaches to goes thru both sides of the frame, one side has a lock collar and the other the outside lift arm. Both set screws did not want to move, the lock collar I cut off with a sawzall. The other side I tried using a torx bit to see if I could loosen up the set screw and I ended up breaking off the torx bit. It was then time to stop for the day. I will try to get it removed tomorrow.
