New project

I did get the front separated from the transmission IMG_20250620_182719251_HDR.jpgIMG_20250620_182727416.jpg I did get most of the front axle apart. I was surprised that there are tapered roller bearings IMG_20250620_182657619.jpgThey are held on with a eccentric locking collar. The one on the left side was very dry and will need replacement. Who ever owned this tractor did not want to grease the left side. The steering is quite different all the time rods connect to a plate under the tractor and held on by a snap ring. IMG_20250620_182713769_HDR.jpgThe center bolt for the front axle is seized in the bushing. It will turn around but will not come out. I had to go pickup a sledge hammer since I can't find my other one. If that doesn't work I will have to cut the bolt twice with a sazall

I stayed in the garage somewhat out of the heat and took more of this tractor apart. I wish I had a window in the garage I would install the extra window ac unit I have vs 2 box fans. The front axle pivot bolt has to be cutout the axle. Most of today was working on removing the rear gear box and transmission

I have heated it up twice and have a big puller on it and it still doesn't want to move.

Progress, I spent a lot of time yesterday trying to get a wheel job off the axle shaft yesterday. I had a puller with 2 bolts attached to the hub and it didn't want to budge yesterday even using heat. Today I put the torch on it and waited and with my impact gun it finally came off. It had to come off to remove the axle. IMG_20250622_123341593.jpgI then split the transmission case open IMG_20250622_131109358_HDR.jpgAnd I found the reason why it was stuck in gear and not shifting.IMG_20250622_131842873_HDR.jpgThe steel plate the shift forks moves has separated from the gear.IMG_20250622_131849871_HDR.jpgIMG_20250622_155918468.jpgIt should look like this but down all the way IMG_20250622_160006257.jpgIt looks like it was brazed on but only half way around. I think if I get it on all the way I can weld it but open for suggestions.

It’s going to be fun to watch your project. I have three in my shop ready to be put back together. I’m hoping I get inspired. Honestly this year with all the rain with short periods of sunshine I feel like all I’ve done this year is cut grass.

I looked at this gear more and decided to weld the piece back on. I went to a buddy's house to use his mig welder, I just have flux core, and spot welded the ring on.IMG_20250622_180548236_HDR.jpgI then used my grinder to smooth it outIMG_20250622_180758785.jpgNow I am waiting on a wire snap ring kit to show up.The old snap ring is in 2 pieces.

Our year started off dry but the last 2 weeks the rain has made up for earlier in the year. Today was hot and humid with wind blowing. I went out at 8 am and mowed most of the yard. The weed eating is put off until later this week when it cools down.

Nice job on the gear repair. Will your daughter be using this tractor once completed or treat it like a trailer queen.

I wish I could cut grass that early. We have so much dew it’s around 10:00 or later before I can cut.

She will be using it, one of the reasons I bought it is for the tiller attachment. I won't have to haul my MF12 to her house to till their garden. I don't know if she will use it to mow or not. Son in law picked up a JD mower this spring.
Living on some hills and the wind blowing the lawn dries up fairly quick.

Sounds like a good deal of a tractor all around. My rear mounted tiller on my Simplicity 7117H is nice. It stopped turning last year so I have it lined up for a tear down. I cut 2 acres this morning we have a heat advisory for the next few days. It’s about 1:30 now I’m done for the day.

Small progress today. The wire snap ring kit I ordered thru Amazon showed up. I finished putting together the shaft with the shift gears and installed in the transmission.
IMG_20250625_165357585_HDR.jpgI then installed the transmission cover. I have to pick up a new pipe plug, the old drain plug was rounded. I still need to scrub it more to get the grease off so it will take paint.
It may be a few weeks before I get back to work on it. Saturday I fly out to my son's house in Mt. Home ID. Spend a couple of days there and then drive my pickup to my Dad's house and also see my second oldest daughter. A couple days there and then drive home. I will be bringing back my economy Jim dandy tractor.

Have a great trip, Ted! That sounds like it will be a very nice time with family! You are very fortunate Dad is still with you!

Didn't know you had an Economy!

That sounds like a fun trip Ted. I’ve known a few guys that have the Economy tractors and they love them. Around here at the tractor shows there’s a lot of them. When I bought my Bolens H16 the guy was restoring a Jim Dandy, that new orange really barks.
