1986 JD 316 Repower

I went to work on this today! I don't know how JD figured on a compressed spring length of 1.650" when locked. Best I could get was 1.875" or I couldn't lock the brakes. Got the new return springs on. All is well there. Can lock up either side when turning, so I have a better chance at forward traction. Also got the 55 lb. weights installed.

Think I'm gonna name this one Ol' Crusty!

If it doesn't feel too bad out there today, I make put the electric PTO back on. Comtemplating putting (or looking at feasibility) the 3 spool valve off the 140 in there. Not sure if the steering box may be in the way!

I got the clutch on and working! I adjusted it to .015" instead of .018 as the SM says as it has some rust on it yet. Sanded most off, but not all. Time will tell.

I looked into the 3-spool option. That will take some head scratching as the u-joint for the steering is right there. Best left till summer when I have time to fiddle with it and the weather is better.

If you ever need another clutch, Kenny, let me know. I have a spare that came off the 314 I had. Don't know if one off a Kohler will fit the Onan.
Mike
The Onan has a 1-7/16" shaft, way bigger than a Kohler!

I've found many older clutches need to be set closer. They still hold strong once engaged, but sometimes have trouble pulling the plate in.
I figured it wouldn't hurt anything as long as it had some gap. I'll know how good it is when I put the deck on later! It's easy to get to and adjust if needed.
