1986 JD 316 Repower

One thing I haven't talked about is this plate has a slight bow in it. I put that up (think smiley) so the weight would work against the bow. This shouldn't get much stress in it normally. It's there to aid in lift and to level the deck.
I had to tube the left rear tire yesterday, too many leaks from weather cracks.

If both rear tires hold air now, I plan to put some 55 lb. wheel weight on there. May help some, just wish it had 2 brake pedals so I could use the brakes when a tire spins. I may look into that this Spring!

Did some snooping at JD Parts and I think it may not be too hard to put a set of 317 brake pedals on here ( I have a set). Main thing will be the brake lock. I won't put the neutral return linkage on as I want the brakes for traction (open spool rear end). I may set the linkage up for it, just not hook it in. Stay tuned!

Kenny, the turning brakes work on the 318, 332 and I don't remember if they still neutral return. Sorry I can't help and I'm still in NC so I can't check my 332.
The 317 had no provision for neutral return. I got the pedals out this morning and confirmed they can be made to fit so I'm going for it when weather evens out some.

Got confirmation the 317 had no neutral return but the 322 did (major work for making that happen as it was from either pedal). I'm gonna leave it off!

Weather is decent out there so I started on the brakes today. Had to fix a broken window on the tractor port first from the wind yesterday! Got the fender pan off!

There is no brake lock on the shaft, it's incorporated into the neutral return. Here's the LH end of the shaft.

And the RH side with the brake rod taken off.

The two pedal assemblies. You can see the differences here.

Saw that the RH pedal needed the brake rod attachment wasn't going to work so I cut it off and made up a new one.

Had to make a new bushing to hold things in the right position side to side. Then drilled a new hole 90° to the original in the LH end of the rod. Got that all put back together.

Trying to decide if I want to make a stop for bringing the pedals back up or not, so I stopped for the day! If I put return springs on, I'll need a way to 'stop' the pedals from going too far.
Really a simple way to add turning brakes to one of these! I will NOT have a brake lock or neutral return on this tractor.

Been thinking about the brake lock along with the stops. Have an idea that may just work. I'll have to still delete the neutral return out of it. Stay tuned!

Another thing I just thought of is whether the inner pedal will clear the fender pan! I'll be checking for that!

I put it all back together and tried it out. Does real well but the LH pedal arm is rubbing on the pan. Brake lock works. Need to fine tune the brake adjustments. I'll see about some different return springs and get that changed later when it's warmer out!

The needed spring is ordered. I'll pick it up at my local dealer when it comes in. If anyone has a 318 or 420 who can get the measurement from the thread end to the washer location, this will help me set mine up right. Here's a pic of what I'm looking for.

I think I have figuered out where to attach the spring to the rod. I uploaded the above pic into my Delta cad program and created some points to measure from. Looks like the spring is attached 60% (of the thread length) forward.

I have made up a couple small trips of metal with 3 holes in them about 1/2" apart. I'll attach them to the rod with the center hole at the dimension I get from the thread measurement.
