Grass seed

Earlier this year the half of my yard that I tilled and reseeded last year looked fantastic. I could definitely see a "line" between where it reseeded and where I left alone. I was thinking I'd have to do the rest to "even if out". I haven't done so.
Now the part I didn't touch looks better, the part I redid is brown and dead looking. I hope I don't have to do again (this would be attempt #3....) but as a whole my yard looks like crap, what isn't burnt out is weedier than it has ever been..... It's been a dry year, areas around us have had plenty, when they have gotten 5" of rain by work we've gotten an inch of we're lucky. That's 30 some miles away. I hear of them getting drenched the same distance north as well .. my mother in law would get 2-1/2" we'll see 3/8". I've been running a sprinkler in the front yard (not every day) and it's largely been a waste.
I want to spray the yard and/or put down some fertilizer but the weeds is all the "green" I have this year.
I do have another section of yard I've been wanting to retill and reseed for a few years..

This seeded area may die off to brown too when I take up the soaker hose. I don't regularly water so that will probably kill it after it gets established. The existing yard is mostly weeds so this nice green strip may be temporary.

If I had planted grass this year it would be in the Gulf of America by now. It has rained and rained out here. If this keeps up this winter we are going to be in for some real snow storms. Right now it's coming straight down by the buckets full.

Dang, Chris, we are getting more rain than usual too but don't think it is near what you describe! I am hoping that the wet weather and humidity does back off by winter, but there may be a lot of s-word this winter if it doesn't. I'm still watering the new grass seed too just trying to get it established. Still need to do a couple other spots in the yard but haven't gotten roundtuit.

I've got spray (trimec with quinchlorac for the crabgrass) I can use or I've got some turf builder with "halts" it's a black bag of which id never seen on the shelf before, difference being the spray would do more for the "weed" than the "feed" side of things.whati don't get is that more than likely next spring it will come up and look beautiful ( pretty weed free) for probably a month then be overtaken. I don't get how that happens.

I have noticed in this area (SW Iowa) the majority of new lawn's are being done with the rolled mats. I haven't been up close to them but a neighbor a mile down the road have it put down around his new home. Came on a large tandem axle trailer, was handled like the large carpet rolls are moved around. Rolls were about 5' wide, but don't know how long. Looked like about 2" thick. Not anything near as big or heavy as sod. Came up and was all even green at the same time. He did a lot of watering and still does but had a beautiful lawn. Have no idea what the cost is on something like this. Thought I saw some on a pallet in the local feed store when picking up dog food.

I thought about buying straw in rolls, but cheaped out for the bales instead. Probably would have been a lot easier to just roll out the straw. It has some kind of biodegradable mesh holding it together. Contractors at my former job used it a lot after tearing up ground for various reasons.

Forgot to water today but when the wind goes down this evening, I'll get it going for a few hours.
