GREAT thread! Learnt a few things...

I should have invested in a good welder a LONG time ago, but never got myself to spend the money. I use a cheap HF welder, and complain every time I use it! :(

I'm glad your enjoying the place, it can get pretty fun here.
There are a lot of smart folks that like to play with tractors too LOL.

Here is some pics of my very first attempt at tigging with copper , tigged a copper pipe to a steel plate then tigged the copper tube to a 90° fitting to see how it would work.

What type of rod did you use, copper ? I think I would like tig welding. I have no trouble useing torches and bronze or steel rods to weld stuff.

Noel

I just stripped a #10 copper ground wire I think it was? Anyways it was pure copper wire that I use for filler rod. And it can be used with a torch too but gets too hot for my liking.

You can not use copper on copper with a torch ! Copper filler for steel to steel with a torch is actually much easier and looks better than using a brazing rod!

Looks good the tig. Silicon bronze tig looks real nice. Thanks for the picture. Will tig do steel rod welding to steel, same as if you used the same steel rod and torches.
Sorry for all the questions skyrydr2, just trying to learn.

If it works for him what can we say??
I'm glad that they are working good for him. It was meant to come across as humorous. My bad.
Years ago I used those lenses and at that time I think they were 1.75 or 2. They were a nice option and I can't remember why I stopped using them. It may have been because prescription glasses worked better when welding pipe fittings out of position.

Noel the tig welds with steel filler AWESOME as it should. I'm seriously addicted to using the tig!
I use it for almost everything except big jobs that would be inefficient to tig I use stick or mig depending on thickness. My favorite is 6013 or 7018 vertical when ever possible!

What amperage does tig go to. Or should I say, what is the amperage range of tig welding, lowest to highest. Just for a home owner type ?

Noel

Oh my cheater lens is the same as Daniel's at 2.5 and even that is a bit strong for stick and Mig but just right for Tig as you really need to see what you are doing! And if you have shaky hands... your gonna have issues getting filler rod on your tungsten.

Just a heads-up: Vulcan OmniPro™ 220 Industrial Multiprocess Welder with 120/240 Volt Input is on sale at Harborfreight.com until 12/17 for U$880.00:
That's the one I've got, and it's an amazingly easy to use, and works amazingly well too! Can get slightly confusing where to plug various cables in for certain stuff. I keep my manual handy for that. Usually I leave my MIG connected.

Just a heads up, this is for DC TIG only. Not for welding aluminum with TIG.
Other than that it looks to be a nice welder for other metals.
My HF Omni 220? If so I didn't realize that, but then I have a spool gun for aluminum. I've welded a lot of aluminum over the years with a normal MIG torch, but you MUST keep the length of the torch outstretched to reduce friction or nasty birdnesting WILL happen!
