I acquired a Ford 8n

The reviews were mostly good, a few said they had to open up the holes and bend stuff to make it fit.
We have to remember that at least ten percent of the people writing reviews shouldn't be allowed to hold a screwdriver much less write a review. And those same people are more likely to post their experiences.
That's a nice looking tank and as Gary said you made the right decision to replace the old one.

That was the best move you could make, Nick! That new tank will save a lot of headaches. Especially if the tank had a baffle in it. Makes then darnnear impossible to clean. A lot of garden tractor tanks have a baffle in them for some stupid reason.

Looking good Nick, you probably saved yourself a lot of headaches going with the new tank
Thanks Gary. Yeah, I think you are right. I have used the POR15 tank sealer before and it held up good, but that tank was not rusted bad like this, so I don’t know how well it would have held up. From what I hear, when that stuff lets loose, it causes more problems than some rust and dirt would. Then I started looking and the new tank was not much more than the POR15 kit to do a tank this size anyway.
Always thought those little 8n's were fun to drive..
Raked a lot of hay with one just like it..And cultivated a lot too.
Yeah, it is fun to drive. This may become my favorite tractor.

That’s true. You also never know if the reviews are even real.

The baffles were one of the reasons I went with a new one. It looks like it has 2, dividing the tank into 4 sections. Like you said, I would have never got it all clean, and if I tried to coat it, I probably never would have got everything covered.

I got the new sediment bowl and fuel line on. No leaks so far.

I should have got a picture of the old fuel line too, but I didn’t. It was cut in 2 places and had short pieces of rubber fuel line between the pieces. Not sure if they did that to make it easier to remove the hood or carburetor, or if the line got damaged and that was how they fixed it.

I'm seeing at an auction today a DEERBORN MODEL 14-15 SICKLE BAR MOWER. I believe they were more fitted towards the 8n/ 9n's. Doesn't even have a $10 bid on it.

I got the transmission/hydraulic fluid changed yesterday. It definitely needed it…

The dipstick was missing, someone shoved a little piece of wood in there to plug up the hole lol. I got a new one…

I also got a new shifter boot since the old one was dry rotted and probably not doing much good.

I would say this tractor is ready to put it to work now. I just need some attachments.

Just FYI the transmission / hydraulic per the manual calls for 80-90wt gear lube, that said I ran my 8N for probably 25+ using what UTF like you did, and had no problems
I know. I did a bunch of reading on some other forums before I bought anything, and this seemed to be what most guys recommended. Plus it’s the same stuff I use in my Cub Cadets, so it’s one less different type of oil I have to buy.
You will find the fluid that Gary’s using works much better during cold weather and is good all year round.
I did read that. I probably won’t be using this tractor much, if at all in the winter, but if I do need it it will be good to go.

We’ll, that’s not good…

I knew this rim was rotting, but didn’t realize it was this bad. I was planning to take the tire off over the winter and clean up the rim to see if it was any good. It’s not any good lol. I ordered a rim, it should be here next week, and I’ll have a tube tomorrow. I’m pretty sure these were filled with calcium. That will not be going back in, and I am going to get it out of the other tire too before that rim rots. That rim looks pretty new.

A little JB weld and duct tape should fix it. ;) I'm dealing with some calcium damage to a rear wheel on our Yanmar right now. Mine is repairable unlike yours.

And you're going to have a fun time getting that tire off Nick.
Tire actually looks pretty good..
Hope you're up with your tetanus shots..

Maybe a couple zip ties too. I saw your post about that. Good thing you caught it early.

I put a tube in one of the rear tires on my Cub, and that was actually pretty easy. Hopefully this one is too. The tire has some big cracks, but it’s ok for now. They are not cheap, so I don’t want to buy one until I absolutely have to.
Got a saw-zaw or other like tool, then the tire is EZ to get off.
I have to save the tire, but I probably could cut the wheel apart if it doesn’t come off easy.
Dang, Nick, did it fail while you were driving it? Sounds like you have a plan to get it rolling again!

DAC
The rim must have came apart while I was driving it, but I didn’t notice it at first. I noticed it a few days after I used the tractor last. The tube busted after the tractor had been sitting untouched for at least a week. I just came home from work one day and the tire was flat, it was good in the morning.
At least the bead is already broke on one side.
Literally broken lol.
