Went and picked up a 317 today.20180719_185225.jpg Got the engine also.20180719_185433.jpg The rod20180719_185644.jpg The piston20180719_185503.jpg More pieces 20180719_185539.jpg Going to need a little help here. Who did you say was the Onan guru. 20180719_185145.jpg Got the blade20180719_185349.jpg Hydraulic lift and angle. 20180719_185253.jpg Got the tiller. but that picture will have to wait for a later post. The block seems good visually. Will try to clean and asses the crank tomorrow. It appears that every thing related to the front suspension/stearing needs bushed to tighten it up. Dont think it has ever lived outside. this will keep me entertained for some time. Don
 
Very nice snag Don. I'm sure that if you take your time it will all go back together just fine. These are simple machines.
With a little patience,focus,and research it will go together pretty easy.
Then you will have a great little utility rig.
 
Which Onan? I have some manuals for quite a few! I have a P220 basket case to put back together before long! Just no bolts for anything!

Not even sure where to find the numbers. Which box do you look in? I may be a while figuring this out. I remember another forum that had lots of information but Carbon media made it FUBAR (flat unusable beyond all reason):thumbs: On that forum I remember mention of a member who was all about Onan but cant remember the name. Some times have a little trouble with my own. Would appreciate memory assistance thanks Don

That is a sad possibility, I would prefer to keep it original. I am in no hurry though it would be great to push snow with it this winter. If I do repower it I will make no irreversible changes. Then if parts become available down the road it can be put back to more original. It may well have already been re powered. Thanks. Don
 
Finally got the crank out.002.jpg secondtryIt needs some cleaning The other rod journal looks fine and measures 1.626 Main journals look good also and measure about 1/2 thousandth under 2" Any suggestions for removing the gulled on remains of the rod? Don 006.jpg005.jpg 008.jpg

Muratic acid will take the aluminum off the journals without hurting the crank at all. Then polish it with some crocus cloth and it'll be good as new. I would check it for being on size.

I have Muriatic acid what is the procedure? I haven't found the specs for the crank listed anywhere. I will keep looking. Also haven't discovered the reason for the failure yet Don

Just dab it on with a brush or rag and let it work. I take an wire brush and rub it with the acid on. Keep it good and wet until it's all cleaned up. The acid won't hurt the steel crank. I've never left it on over night or anything like that.

Rinse with water? neutralize with soda? Does it work faster in hot weather? I found and been reading a service manual on line. Specs say this crank is about like new. In the morning I will go play with the acid, got gloves, face shield, glasses, wire brush, old sacrificial cloths. Think I can do this. cylinders look fine, tomorrow I will find the snap gauges and larger mikes and asses condition. This is starting to be fun. Thanks for all the information and help. Don
 
Muratic acid is just diluted HCl or Hydrochloric acid. I would neutralize the acid with baking soda when you're done. Heat will also increase the rate of any reaction but keeping it wet will be difficult in the hot weather right now. You could also try soaking the crank in a plastic contains that fits only the journal that is effected.
