MF 1450

Brought the MF1450 in this morning. Had some other crap to do but got working on it in the afternoon.
Pulled the fuel tank and checked the shutoff valve for screens or blockage. No screen and it seems to open correctly.

Decided to re-plumb the whole fuel line eliminating the chinese shutoff valve. Since the fuel line was disconnected, the carb got removed (pain in the @$$) and checked over. Chinese carb too, this thing had no carb on it when I got it.

Took the idle and high speed needles out and they look to be in good condition.

Float level was real high so like a genius I decided to level it like normal carbs. Pic is upside down to show closed needle position.

Spark plug color looks pretty good to me.

Blew out the passages and put it back together and routed a new piece of fuel line.

I can get it to rev now kinda, but it is running super rich. How did that happen? When it blubbers and dies, black smoke blows out the carb and even liquid gas. Don't idle as good as before either. Wish I could afford a new engine---LOL!

I guess I better put the float level back even though it seems backward to me. Then start going through the ignition.

I must have really worded things badly in that last post Daniel. That high float level picture I posted was from the factory. I had never taken the bowl off until yesterday. I didn't take a picture of the float level after I adjusted it. I also know which screw is which. I set them to factory recommended settings before starting the tractor yesterday and tried adjusting from there. Couldn't really get the engine to run well enough high speed or idle to do good adjustments.

Finding one of those original tanks was pretty expensive so that is why I cut the factory mount out and build a bracket for the tank that was removed from the MF12G. About a year after I butchered those mounts out a local guy said he had one he would give me! Oh well. This pile of crap isn't ever going to be restoration material anyway. Might become scrap first!

I know that feeling! I'm a cheapskate, too- try to fix everything I can, before I buy new. My wife doesn't understand it, but she puts up with me anyway :-)

I have always been a use what I have that will do the job before buying new. Wanted to go with used electrical boxes and 21/2 wg wiring I had on hand for a few outlets inside my shipping container. Electrician that wan going to do the overhead, entrance and breaker box install along with the outlets said he would not use that. Would get new boxes and run conduit and wire. I asked why. He said when the wind blows the container will shake and could rub through the wiring and cause a short ? o_O Told him no way and he could do the outside and I would take care of the inside. He won't even call be back now. His loss as I got another electrician that will do it and using the used boxes and wire.

If I was that electrician I wouldn't have done it either. He's liable for not only the work but the materials he installed. Insurance company is not going to let him off the hook just because of your desire to use secondhand parts. All he has to do is miss one nick in a conductor and it could injure someone or start a fire. His license and lively hood would be gone.
If I was doing it for myself and it didn't involve my occupation, I'd use the used stuff also but not for anyone else.
 
Everyone is afraid of the Liability any more. That electrician was fine using the old power line to get power to that container. It had been out as an overhead for many years supplying power to a well and building. When I took part of it down and used it through PVC to power the old wood shop. Who knows how old it is and that didn't bother him one bit to use. He even suggested that we use the breaker box that was in the old wood shop. If he was afraid of using used part why just the wall boxes and not the rest. Personally, I think he wanted the extra time and mark up for the new material which would have amounted to 4-$500. Regardless, the guy doing the work is just going to put the line overhead from a pole into the breaker box. I will do the outlets and my other contact will go from the pole to the meter loop.

When my shop was built 34 years ago, I had to have a licensed electrician do the underground from the meter post to the shop and install the breaker panel. Me and my brother in law did the rest inside. County code didn't require anything else to be done by a contractor. That shipping container probably don't shake in the wind near as much as a pole barn with 14' sidewalls! Also western South Dakota wind! Almost Wyoming out here ya know---LOL!

Didn't work on anything today besides some Medicare stuff I got behind on. Been sickly with some kind of crud. Hope it clears up soon!

About I did was get the trailer ready to haul a LT home tomorrow. Don't really need it - yet but for the price it will be a good donor, or make the one we have the donor with the good Briggs engine when that Kohler ventilates.

It sounded like this new to you LT is in better shape than Carolyn's? Might be worth doing the engine swap soon as you figure if the newer one is in good shape other than the engine. That K321 has sounded like it wants to ventilate itself since I got it running and after I overhauled it, it didn't sound any better. Now this situation is making me dislike bigger Kohler single cylinders quite a bit. The K181 in the JD 110 purrs like a kitten but was in as bad of shape when I got it.

my dad and I have had a ton of the k321 engines. It just seems like sometimes they just don’t want to run anymore. We have had a couple that just never ran right. Almost like they were out of time but they weren’t.

I don't know much about them as this is the only one I ever had. Maybe that stupid flywheel key is shearing again. I am on the fence about ordering a $70 ignition kit. Kohler points set, new coil, plug wire, plug, condenser. Only the points are advertised as "Kohler". For 60 bucks can get the same kit with probably Chinese points.

Probably should put that float back to that ridiculously high level the factory had it at, but I can't help but think that's not the issue. That was all I changed and it seemed to start flooding when I leveled the float!
