RED's 2018 Winter refresh - 1990 917.254450 Craftsman

Just a pain. I'll leave the engine un-bolted till I address the alternator and take it outside to blow the fins out. Tins will get painted, and I'll do a test fire without the tins and one mount bolt attached just to make sure all is good before I add all the other mount bolts. This is a weekend project as I am beat after work on the week days.
 
I messed around with RED tonight. Removed the dobber nests and vacuumed. Took the dual stator off, looks like it had seen better days. Found a good single wire stator, plan is to blow everything off and assemble to where I can fire this up before I put the new parts on it.

So... after 2 hours I was able to get 1 - 1/2 funnel full in there. Had to tilt the tractor and use a screwdriver to poke some. I'll leave this till in the morning and cap it off. I think there was a lot of grease still in there. You can see how thick this in on the screw driver.

Slowness is due to no ventintg. To put grease in have to let air out. Pressure build up and stalls out the process.
 
I got 3 funnels in there, I expect it is pretty full. Mainly to keep it shifting easy. Leaks out at the axles over the summer use, and a + it has lubed the rim on the axle so at least one tire can be removed. The stuck rim in on the tire with a slow leak, so the tractor is leaning that way. hopefully the same happens to that rim.
 
Need to pick yourself up a rose gun. Works great for shooting heavy oil in.

Although a good search I cant find a rose gun. Being something we use at the mine it's hard to tell what the real name is...had a handle on the back and the other end is open. You stick it down in the oil and pull the plunger back and it fills up the gun. Then stick it in the fill hole and push the plunger in to shoot the oil out. Works great for thick oils that are almost grease.

I just bought what you are describing, a suction gun, got it at Oreilly, part number W54220, $12.99 plus tax. At least I think that is what you are describing. I had an old one with some sort of wrapped metal tube on it, dropped it earlier this year and couldn't fix it proper so I searched and bought another.

Looks similar, same function. The ones we get are solid metal with no hose on the end just an opening for oil to squirt from or be sucked up through.
 
Good day today, got up to 75* and is still 70* at 6:00 Pm in the shop (not bad for the first day of winter). Needed to exit the house so Mom could clean for tomorrow’s dinner. We were going to go to a Nerf battle arena but no one was there. So he decided on Urban Air. Haven’t been there in over a year, and they did some upgrades, most impressive was the zip / roller-coaster line. My grandson bout wore that out. They added rock walls five different ones, and upgraded the ninja warrior course. Still had the standard dodge ball and trampolines. Two hours isn’t enough for him now, so we finally got out of there 2-1/2 hours later. (only paid for 2 hours). Once home I changed the oil in my beater car, then worked on RED. Moved him out side to blow the rest of the dobber mud out of the fins. Installed the 9 amp single wire alternator. Put the flywheel back on.

Plan is to add the tins, hook up the gas tank and battery and see if this thing runs before, I replace the filters and plugs. Maybe tomorrow, but we have company coming over.

Merry Christmas eve all! I finished installing the spare un-tested Brigs 18hp twin on RED. Charged the battery, Purged the fuel lines with the defunct blood pressure monitor and tried to start it.
Starter will need rebuilt and the coil pack will need checked or changed.
If this runs I may buy a new coil pack for it.
Got to use a Christmas present today. No tripping on power cords now!

BOH may have to pick up mowing duties. Merry Christmas All! 60* at 6:00am this morning and fog. Opened the shop up and did some coil testing. From the internet I am supposed to get a reading of several k ohm from the kill wire to ground. I am getting .7 ohm on the 200 ohm setting on both coils. Dug out some more and only found one that gives .28k ohm on the 20k setting. I either have a box full of dead coils, or I am not reading these correctly. I even checked RED’s good engine and get .8 ohm on the 200 ohm setting. I am really confused at this point. I think I’ll put this aside and check the starter.

This one is going into the parts box, Starter is fubar also. I am not sinking any $$$ into it. The original engine will be installed.
 
opposed Briggs twin.... OEM Briggs starters aren't that expensive for that series of engine, brand new. . Youll find a coil too.

A thought. while still bolted down, steal the coil and starter from the original engine and see if this one will run. If you still put the original sngine back on, keep this one, if the original one does wear out then you can rob those known good parts from the original engine at that time swap them back on this one and youre back in business.... youre closest now to having this engine run that you will be, best time to test things out to verify it's good, or good for parts or good for door stop. (or scrap) Mine have Kohlers but I did the same with 2 of the 3 twin Magnums I have here to determine whether they were worth anything to me.

oh and my last Briggs opposed twin coil failure? Caused by mice. I just wish I could have known right when they were doing their dirty work, and cranked the engine just at that moment. same thoughts as how a bug zapper works.
 
It has more issues.... Already removed and parts boxed.
