Sawdust’s Garden 2022

Around here it seems if I plant something in the first of April and do a second planting of the same thing the first of May, they almost start producing at the same time. I've run into this numerous times with Sweetcorn.
I agree I’ve done that with beets before. The second planting does better because some of the first seeds never sprouted because of it being too cold or rotted. Chris did you get any snow last night. I seen where some of the Dakotas got snow.

I’m still eating last years crop. They were put in storage first week or so of October 2021. Granted the eyes are growing a bit. But the potatoe still firm. I doubt any light gets to these potatoes. I’d say it’s their time clock to start sprouting. And of course is warming up a bit.

Some pictures of me planting potatoes April 28/17.
The good old days. Don’t plant there any more. Getting less and less.
This was at my neighbours land 1/2 hour away. Jumpins, I use to plant a lot of potatoes out there.

I picked up some seed potatoes yesterday and all three places I patronize were slim pickings and no Yukon Gold. I got 10lbs. of each Red Pontiac, and Kennebec. We had about 8 pounds of Yukon Gold from last year so I planted them yesterday. Rain will be every other day until Monday so maybe I will plant the potatoes late next week. I got sticker shock when I seen the price of seed corn $21.78 a pound. I got a half pound of Peaches and Cream along with some last years seeds we should be ok. I planted three 25’ rows of beets and picked a few more onions. We started hardening off some of the seedlings. We tried a different starter seed mix this year because we couldn’t get what we normally use. They are growing really slow.

Haven't done a thing in the garden yet. Wife picked up some Yukon Gold yesterday at Runnings and we will use our own Pontiac Reds. Looks like it's finally going to warm up some and the wind has laid down for now but more rain is coming later in the week. Took the Fordson out with the disc to work up the 5 acres here at home but it was still too wet.
Come on Spring.

Teresa and I picked up plants today. 8 cucumber, 48 sweet bell peppers, around 80 onion slips, 12 broccoli, 4 yellow squash, and 4 zucchini, and 4 tomato. Also got plenty of bush green bean seeds. Already had my sweet corn. But the flood rain we just got will put off planting/transplanting a few days.

So Jim, will you get about 300 lbs or so out of the potatoes you planted ?

Noel
No way Noel last year was our best year out here in the 7 years we’ve been here. My problem is the size. I had 8-10 tubers on each plant most were golf ball size. I couldn’t fertilize because no one had any. I’m thinking that’s why. I did water good also.
