Sawdust’s Garden 2022

Teresa and I picked up plants today. 8 cucumber, 48 sweet bell peppers, around 80 onion slips, 12 broccoli, 4 yellow squash, and 4 zucchini, and 4 tomato. Also got plenty of bush green bean seeds. Already had my sweet corn. But the flood rain we just got will put off planting/transplanting a few days.
I enjoy growing peppers too Daniel them things got up to $1.25 each this past winter.

I’m a little disappointed I was only able to plant two 45’ rows of potatoes Kennebec and Red Pontiac. I get so aggravated at the feed and nursery stores for bringing stuff in too early to make a sale then no more available when your ready to plant. If I buy them then by the time I can plant they have rotted. This year I waited but was fortunate to get what I could... no Yukon Golds which is my favorite. I also got five 45’ rows of Peaches and Cream corn planted.

My second planting of onions are about 3” high and the beets are about 2” high and most all of them sprouted. Carol plants the beets in rows I like to sow them, it’s hard for me to drop them little seeds. I tried her method this year and it looks like I’ll be thinning a lot .

My 1954 one of a kind Kentucky born and bread seed planter says hi to all my TF friends. She’s planting corn.

Today was going to be a do nothing day but we never got the rain we were suppose to get last night so we planted some more today. We planted some carrots, cucumbers, bush beans, zucchini, squash and some mixed pumpkins for Fall decorations. We’re getting some much needed rain late tonight so that will work out good for everything. Tomorrow will be our do nothing day and much needed.

Beets are almost ready to thin. The third planting of onions almost ready. I plant a 10’ double row every third week. We pick every other onion then leave the others for Fall onions.

Really disappointed with the tomatoes and peppers this year. We couldn’t find our usual starter mix and had to use-something else. None of them are consistent. All came from the same seed pack and the same soil mix used. They should be much larger than this by now. The have already been hardened off so I might plant them this weekend.

My green and yellow beans are doing good. And the potatoe plant with the beans, is doing good. I didn’t plant that potatoe plant this year. Is been in the ground there since last year or year before. Beets, carrots, and lettuce coming up. Hard to see in picture maybe. Potatoes I planted are not up yet.
Quite a garden you got there Jim.

Yesterday was a real good day. We planted 27 tomato and 42 pepper plants. I barely got enough compost out of my last bin to put with them. All we need to plant now are some pole beans, okra, cabbage, and maybe some turnips. I’ll have some pics in a few days these plants are so small compared to how they normally are before planting. My daughter started her plants as I mentioned earlier and hers are done very well. I found out on Monday she used starter soil from The Dollar Tree less than $2. a bag. We paid almost $8. for Burpee’s. I’m going over to my sons house this morning to finish his garden fence. We dug all the post holes last week. They are anxious to get their garden started. Rain tonight and all day tomorrow so it might be a relaxing day in the shop. I’m tired of “playing in the dirt” for awhile.

After a 1/2" of rain night before last garden is still wet. Got everything planted but the Sweet Poataoes nand they havne't came yet. Maybe Friday. Radish and lettuce is up nice now. One row of beans is breaking through as i a row of peas. Cucumbers I put in last Sunday morning are through already. Tomato plants are 16-18" tall. About to remove the rings and put the cages down. Cabbage needs a little more height before I remove the rings or the rabbits will go after them. Ned to go wabbit hunting as we have to darn many around here. Cats used to keep them thined down but only 2 cats left are to old to hunt.

Our stray cat Rusty had us a big rabbit present Sunday morning laying by the back porch. We have a lot of rabbits usually. Carol has planted her sunflowers three times this year until I put a small fence around them. Once they get so high the rabbits don’t bother them.

I had a big day planned today but cut way too short because of rain. I did get the 5 rows of corn cultivated and fertilized. I hilled the 2 rows of potatoes for the first time and fertilized. I only have one small spot in the potatoes that barely came up.

The beets are the size of a small marbles, most of these onions will be left to dig in the fall. I’ll be planting some more onions soon. The carrots are scattered and a lot never came up but will replant them.

The tomatoes and peppers are small but coming along well.

I was hoping to get the pole beans planted but the rain started a lot sooner than predicted.

I was with some folks the other day discussing the costs of plants this year. Most bought their plants between $2.- $6. a plant. Only two of us started our own plants. Out of curiosity I figured out our cost this year to start our tomatoes and peppers. We ended up with 44 peppers and 93 tomatoes at a cost of .29 cents each. The sun is back out I may go back out and plant the pole beans. Right now Carol is fixing biscuits, gravy, bacon, and fried potatoes, that is priority right now.

Well I got about a three hour period before the next rain came so I got busy on the bean poles. I planted 4 teepees of 1/2 Runners, 1 Fine Crocket, 1 Striped Greasy, 1 Mountain. Some of these are Carols stash of beans that have been in her family back three generations.

Hard to believe it’s just been a little over two weeks ago the difference. We had a little set back the tomatoes showed some signs of nitrogen deficiency so I have them a dose of blood meal. Just three days later they got their green color back. We lost 4 pepper plants mainly although they were hardened off they were just to young to be planted.

The bush beans are doing good but I think next year I’ll plant them late for a fall crop. Last year I did that and they were still producing up until frost. We still have 23 quarts of canned beans so this may be all we plant this year. The cucumbers are sprouting and tiny cukes are appearing.

Tomatoes are doing well with a few too early blooms so I pinched them off to develop a more healthy plant. Pole beans are a few inches high.

Haven't seen the graden since Tuesday. Fighting to keep the BP have way regulated. Up and down like a Yo-yo. I know the weeds are trying to take over. Radish are done, nothing but tops. Lettuce is doing great, goats are loving it Carolyn says. Peas and been will get sprayed and some mini gourds planted and hope the preen works. If I have the energy and feel up to it going down in the morning, baring rain, with the sprayer and kill off a bunch of weeds. If we can't take care of it the weeds are not going to get it either.
