Workin' on a Farmall

I got the carb put together and installed. Figured I should try to start it so I pulled the plugs to shoot some oil in each cylinder. I noticed some rust in the 2 front cylinders. I shot some WD-40 and oil in and turned it over. That seamed to cut the rust and I could then see a shiny cylinder wall with a nice cross hatch pattern in it. Put the plugs back in and gave it a try. It fired and quit around 6-7 times and then began to run. It sounded like it was only hitting on 2 cylinders at first and then picked up the other two, but would occasionally one would drop out. I think I will check the plugs again and maybe do a compression test. With the rust in the cylinders I may be fighting a sticky valve
 
After getting the fire going in the wood furnace I pulled the plugs back out of the 340. No wonder it was missing. The No. 2 plug was caked with crud and No. 1 wasn't much better. I cleaned them up again in the glass bead cabinet, installed them, and the engine fired right up. It runs good and smooth now. There is a bit of a whine or howl that sounds like hydraulic pump noise. I need to check fluid levels and see if thats the problem. I'll post a video once its uploaded.

Made a road trip today to get some Trans/Hydraulic oil. The oil in the trans now has water in it. It has a milky yellow appearance to it. I also picked up a water temp gauge and a new oil gauge line. The old oil line is rust pitted to the point of leaking when the tractor is running.

Another problem with this tractor is the hydraulics didn't seem to be working. The 2-point lift wouldn't lift or drop when I move the lever. I drained the trans out today, pulled the filter cover, and found the round screen in the filter was completely plugged with thick gooey crud. I'm assuming the filter is plugged with the same stuff. I'm hoping this might be the problem with the lift.

That filter is defiitely the issue. The same system on my IH T340 high lift crawler, and found the same thing. Mine had a much larger screen, but once I got it clean, I had strong hydraulics, where I virtually had none before.

That's good to here, olcowhand. Hope it works for this tractor also.
 
The lower shaft on the PTO has been leaking oil since I pulled the tractor in the shop. Figured this was a good time to put a new seal in so I dug the old one out and i will see if NAPA has one tomorrow. Now that the trans has drained really good I looked through the fill and drain plug holes and it looks clean inside. I cracked open the engine drain plug to see if there was any water or antifreeze in the oil. Not a drop of either came out.

I also picked up a new hydraulic filter today.

I checked around several parts stores including the Case IH dealer for the PTO seal and nobody had one in stock. I ordered a new one from NAPA that will be here next Tuesday. The only thing I did on the tractor was clean the screen and install the new hydraulic filter.

Hi cjet, your making progress those were a couple nasty spark plugs but that hyd filter was really something, but its working good now its always nice when things work out
 
While I was trying out the Fast Hitch lift system I noticed the flat bars for the anti-sway were bending as the lift was raised and lowered. It looked like the lower pivot shaft was rusted solid and not turning. I got it pulled out and set it up in the press where I was able to push the shaft out. I'll get it cleaned up good and plan on putting a couple grease fittings in it before I install it. It never makes sense to me why a part like this would be built without a way to grease it.

I like your press cjet, wish I had one that big and powered mine is shop built using a 15 ton bottle jack got it uncomp;eted about 30 yrs ago have always been going to upgrade it but never get around to it

I built that press when I was in high school. Dad had a 17.5 ton porta-power mounted in a thick steel plate that provides the power. This one is a hand pump model. Dad bought another press years ago that has an electric motor driven pump. Its not as strong as this one, but its sure nice to use.
