And more junk.

Looks like a row of boxes for each size. Pick up a few lbs. each trip to the hardware section and it won't be too painful to get a stock on hand.
Once I know what I have, Roger, that sounds like a good plan!

Did more sorting this afternoon for a couple hours. Biggest inventory was a box of 5/16" flange head stainless steel bolts. Came from the scrap trailer at my former job. Most are brand new but they were all in a metal 5-gallon bucket along with a bunch of other misc bolts and washers out in the weather. Who knows how many years. Someone set the bucket in the scrap trailer rather than just dumping it thankfully. I sorted them out with a magnet several years ago at work after digging them out of the trailer, removing the steel stuff obviously. There were a dozen or so 3/8" mixed in. Pretty handy size to have, but I will never use them all in my lifetime! Got some other 5/16" stuff sorted too.

DAC- start restoring a few Massey garden tractors and you will use up a good share of those 5/16 and some 1/4 bolts. I use a lot of stainless steel bolts installing sheet metal on the garden tractors.

Yeah Ted! I'm not a restorer but I did use a lot of those flange head bolts getting the beat and bent MF1450 running! Do you need any for your MF's? I sure would send you some! The MF12G doesn't need a resto and the MF8E was a whole different deal. Think I would get divorced if I bought any more tractors.

Several years ago, I bought a 5 gal. pail of assorted bolts, nuts, washers you name it. Top was variety of 2/16 up to 5/8. After I bought the pil I could hardly lift it to get it to the truck let alone in the box without help. When I started to empty it I found it was all 3/4 up to 1' bolts and few nuts. Yellow heads. Later learned the guy used to work on Cat crawler tractors.

I'd buy half those stainless nuts and bolts if you want to sell some!
I don't have stainless nuts, unless you need 9/16"---LOL! I'll cover that later in this post. Just the 5/16" flange bolts. Let me message you tomorrow Daniel! Pretty sure I owe you!

There was almost no wind today and with temps in the 40's the windmill went outside and got staked down! Nice to have it out of the way in the shop! There was a very light rain happening but I'm glad it's outside now.

Used these 12" staples to plant it.

Got my knees wet since it was raining---LOL! Supposed to turn into s-word tonight and tomorrow even into Thursday, dang it!
Sorted some more junk into boxes for the bin. Going to leave 1/4" stuff in those drawer organizers for now. What I have fits in them just fine.
5/16 and 9/16 are pretty much done I think, depending on what other crap I run into.

Decided to take a look in this "cluster bucket". Pic is after I pulled a bag of 9/16" SS nuts out of it.

I think this is mostly stuff like self drilling screws and such. Those are always good to have on hand. This bag of 9/16 nuts will probably never get used. I put them in one of the bin boxes anyway.

Slowly getting some junk organized at least.

DAC I do not need any for my tractors, i appreciate the offer. I was to the point of not planning on restoring a GT this year unless something comes up on facebook as a bargain. I still have a early MF12 Hydro in a storage unit which needs work. I need to bring over my larger case farm tractor and finish a few items on the front end, to have it ready to go to tractor shows this summer.

The windmill looks really good Doug. That’s a job assorting hardware. I started doing this last year but got aggravated with it. I done the same for years most every time I went to TSC I would buy a couple of pounds of something. I keep an on going list of what I don’t have on my Notes App on my phone. I cut up 3” high sections of a vinyl downspout and lined them up in a few drawers. I had them all full with the same size bolt, washer, lock washer, and nut in each row. One day I opened one of the drawers and they all jumped up causing a big mess. I never realized the YouTube idea I seen the guy glued the bins to the drawer bottom. When my son was little I would give him a big pile of hardware and he loved assorting them and was good at it. I would pay him good which helped him to do a good job. Lol

I actually could use some 9/16 stainless nuts. Put together what you'd like to get rid of and give me a price with shipping and I'll send money. And you don't owe me anything bud!
Will send you a message shortly, Daniel.

Didn't get much done in the shop today. Loree had 2 clients back out of their appointments this afternoon so she just came home from work early. We went into town and had a lunch/supper at a restaurant downtown. I usually avoid downtown like the plague but there is one place we like to eat at occasionally.

Guess it was Valentine's Day so I might have scored some brownie points with her---LOL!

Thanks, Jim! Wish I had a kid around to pay off to do some of this stuff!

Had some online medical stuff to do today that I've been putting off, and also paid some bills. Gotta go to Walmart tomorrow to pic up prescriptions.

This sorting of junk will probably take the rest of my life---LOL! Then, it is so hard to think about throwing some of it in the garbage that I will probably never use! Doubt I'll ever find a use for some of this junk but a lot of it is new in the bag!
DSCN6106.JPG

Some of them there aren't very many and others like those machine screws, there's quite a few! Then there was a tub of dull drill bits! Those are mine from over the years. I've got a drill doctor and an old craftsman sharpener that was never used. Have had some success with the drill doctor, but have yet to use the craftsman one. Yup they came from the scrap trailer too. I shake too bad to sharpen bits freehand any more. They should all go in the garbage too and just buy some new!

I have a lot of hardware in packs putting things together all these years on my job. The manufactures always have them generic bags for everything and a lot you won’t use. I have a pile of bits I need to sharpen too with my drill doctor. It’s hard for me too Doug to throw stuff away.

Remember the old saying; Throw it in the dumpster after the auction, not before. I use the Drill Dr. regular and have good luck with it. When a bit does screw up it is usualoly my fault for not getting it set right to start with.
I have done that too Roger, not getting the bit indexed right in the Drill Dr, then making it so bad it has to be trashed!

This stuff that came in bags were from Fastenal, bought for something specific, then probably that particular piece of equipment broke down bad enough to replace then the new equipment doesn't use the same hardware. Some were just general usage too.

Most of the nails will go in the garbage as my hands don't hang on to hammers all that well any more. Good for some whacks but steady hammering like the framing days, can't happen any more. That's why I have to use screws a lot in wooden construction like those tractor decks I built for the lift.

Needle nose vice grips work great for nails and preventing blue finger disease.
Our shop teacher taught us how to sharpen drill bits and I never looked back. Eyes are to the point where smaller than 5/32” is just about impossible anymore. Even then I might just be pretending.

I never could sharpen or even touch up a drill bit. One gets dull or broke off it goes in a can or box and get sharpened down the road sometime in the basement shop. The sharpening wheel wore out on my old Drill Dr. Called them to get a replacement -- NLA. Gave me a heck of an offer on a new model with an extra wheel, I think it was around $50 or so. Much easier to use then the older units were plus I have an extra diamond wheel if/when I need it.
