Back in the shop doing light duty things

Now that we are talking head gaskets has anyone heard of or used aluminum paint on an old head gasket?
Dun it many times. Dismantled 3 early 80 Subaru engines. Eyeballed the best parts pout of the three, bolted one back together Painted the head gaskets. Silicone on most of the others. Never spent a dime other than paint silicone oil and grease. Drove that car 120 miles a day for 1 1/2 years and traded it in on a cheep pickup.

I see what you mean about the centering ring now, Gary. Copper coat is still available and works well. It came about when automotive head gaskets were stamped steel. The head on my K321 had some pitting from the old head gasket so I used it on there. Looks like my gasket has the ring you guys are talking about. Just did this last weekend, so it hasn't been run yet. I used copper coat on a B/S in the LT my wife mows with. It had a blown head gasket and the bolt design was very poor around the cylinder. Looked like a issue that could happen again to me. So far so good.

I knew I seen that before , the centring ring. But didn’t know any thing about that. So I have a K321 engine in my pile of stuff with that ring. I may have two maybe.
Not a good picture. But there it is.

You're welcome. It's not a paint Gary, it will still be a little sticky when you install the head gasket. Like it says on the can, it's a high temp sealer.

I've ordered a few parts for the Kohler 16hp engine and it being pretty cold I didn't go into the shop this morning to work on it instead started on paper work for the engine, did a repair order listing the parts I've bought and for a virtually free engine its going to cost some money, the biggest item being a cylinder head so far the parts cost is $259.00.
I ordered new valves as I can see the intake valve is really recessed and the exhaust valve looks like it should replaced also, so I have a question about valve lapping tools, I have the suction cup Firestarter stick type but the suction cups are old and don't work so I've been looking into options I like the looks of this tool and I'm wondering if anyone has used one or has one

Looks like it has a 63% approval rating, Gary, BUT one guy thought that is was working wrong by it changing directions back and forth! Really hard to trust the good and bad reviews sometimes. I remember old ones that you cranked like a hand drill. I bet those worked really well!

I just did mine on the K321 a while back with the old suction cup on a stick.

Make sure that it's not a thin valve seat too. If the valve has a thick margin it is probably the valve seat. This exhaust valve seat on a head from my '72 GMC was a little worn out---LOL! Surprisingly it still had 125 psi compression!

The only lapping tool I’ve ever used is the wooden stick that had suction cups on both ends for different sizes. You just rolled it back and forth in the palms of both hands. I agree you can’t put much confidence in product reviews any more.
