Massey Harris Pony Renovation.

Dry here but not warm. Worked all most all morning fixing a rifle range in the woods. I always like to see new paint on one of my tractors. Talking a possiable snow mix Friday.

Paint here is real expencive also and the red is one of the most expencive.

Hi Everybody . So great progress made with the Pony this last couple of weeks. Three undercoats completed and today I have painted the first top coat on the entire underside and a fair bit of the upper castings and engine area...I wasn’t happy with the finish on the rear wings / fenders and battery side plates . I sprayed them hanging vertical and ended up with a few runs. Now I haven’t done any spraying for the best part of 25 years and I wasn’t expecting a top class finish from my cheapish new spray gun but I am a bit fussy so I had to block the panels and respray..Super pleased with the results and now looking to get the whole tractor paint work completed the early part of next week. I do have a question for everybody. The cylinder head on my tractor is unpainted Silver / aluminium. I have seen some pictures of the same but I would imagine that the head has been replaced somewhen and not repainted. So is the original cylinder on the Canadian ,American models red.

Yes all the North American Pony's heads were painted as were the entire block a nice Massey red.
Looks good and glad you blocked the runs out. If the jobe wqas worth the doing it was worth the doing right my daddy used to say and would have approved also.

A 1949 Massey Pony wht his first tractor with rubber tires, He made a lot money doing gardens in near by village in the springs.

Thanks for all your comments everyone. I did watch some videos, French, Canadian and American last night and there were both red and silver heads. The majority being red. Also headlamps and starter / dynamo are fitted as red or black . I’m guessing the original were all red so decisions to be made. Enjoy your weekend all. It’s raining here in South West France so a day of rest methinks.

I believe most generators for the North American massey tractors we supplied by auto lite and came to the factorys black and remained that way. But once the tractor was traded in at a dealer they many times got painted red.

Rained here early this week. 8 inches about a hour north of my home, washed out two dams first emptying a man made lake. That caused the second dam to go and flooded a village and a town. People there are still dealing with unsafe bridges and having to drive hours to find safe routes around the river.

Hi Al. It seems the weather up your way has been far worse than ours here in France. To be fair it only rained here this morning just as we were walking the dogs. Your’s sounds like biblical proportions...Hope you are all safe all be it a bit wet..I had a response from some French guys on a forum over here and the consensus is red all over as I suspected.

Well. Strangely I saw a MH pony today. Unrestored. Didn’t get a very good picture, but the head was not painted. And I did not get to talk to the guy.

Noel.

Hi everyone. A little more progress this week on the Pony. Got to the stage of rebuilding the old girl after the final top coat. Now awaiting for a new set of front grill and side plate screws to arrive along with new gauges and high tension leads. Rear wings to go on and finally the wheels.

Hi everybody. Hope you are all well during these difficult times. Just an update on the Pony renovation. 51 weeks in and the job is nearly complete. Some lamps needed and a 6 volt battery which is being transported from the UK to France. The tyres need some work but they are mega money here so some Tyre paint will have to do in the interim
