Sawdust’s Garden 2023

We transplanted most of the tomatoes the other day, cabbages maybe in a couple more days then the peppers should be ready soon. We used some different starter mix this year from Menards. The root mass on these little guys were enormous unlike the past two years.

I prepped our three raised beds with some 10-10-10 fertilizer with some wood ashes using the little cultivator. Last fall I added a lot of leaves and grass clippings. I planted a total of 40’ of red, white, and yellow onions in one of our raised beds. I’ll plant more of the white, and yellow once these start sprouting. I’ll plant more reds late summer.

Hehe. Still covered in snow here. But, I remember 10 years ago we had a very early spring. The snow was gone, frost out of the ground and muddy ground all dried up. I was plowing the garden April first that year. That’s not normal for here.
I had potatoes planted the second or third week of April that year.

It’s a custom to get potatoes out by Good Friday around here but I’m not sure I can it’s just too wet.

Came through town yesterday and saw someone had part of their garden in. It was plant of some kind in a row, rest was tilled. Probably onion sets. 31° this morning at 6 am. Not doing any garden at those temps. Ground tem is to cold for anything to gorw anyway. Those plants will be just like that 2 weeks from now.

The tomatoes and peppers have been hardening off for a week or so and about ready to plant. The Roma tomatoes didn’t make it even after two plantings I guess some bad seeds. The onions are doing well and are good.

We planted four 40’ rows of potatoes of Yukon Gold, Red Pontiacs, Russets, and some of last years Kennebecs. We have three days of rain predicted starting tonight so that will be good. The left side will be corn.

I had Jeremiah helping out for awhile.

The onions and lettuce are doing well. We planted 27 tomato plants on Friday. I only had one of three compost bins working over the winter. This was more than I thought we would have. I hate buying that stuff it can get expensive. I’m hoping to rebuild these this year.

The potatoes are starting to pop up. The seed potatoes from last year are coming up faster. I had these in a plastic milk crate, in a dark area, and cool but they still had sprouts from 12-24” long. I just laid everything down in the furrow. I’ve never planted potatoes with sprouts that long. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Be neat to know that Jim. I threw a few in the ground on Saturday. They had sprouts about an inch long.
And I put two different variety’s in the same hole. Ran out of space, and maybe I was lazy to dig more holes to plant them in. Any way. I curious to see what happens with the different potatoes planted in the same hole.

Noel.

The larger area where all the veining plants are was turning green so it got the tiller treatment. The put the preen down in about a 8' circle around the planted crops. Had to removed the one side fence to till a strip for the cucumber panel. Tilled it up and put up a 16' x 48" hog panel for the cucs to grow up on. Planted the seeds about 3 to the hill about 10" apart along the panel. Then had to put the fence back up or rabbits would have a field day. Back was killing me after all the walking on soft ground even though the tilling was with the tractor mounted unit. Now we could sure use a rain but nothing in the forecast. Maybe artificial rain about Tuesday evening.

Here is what they looked like Noel. It was funny I was in the back of the basement no light on just a flashlight and I bent over and my head ran into these vines. I thought a group of spiders had me. Lol

Started early this morning we planted 46 pepper plants, sweet bell, Poblano, and jalapeño, two rows of bush beans, zucchini and squash, cabbages, and some more onions. The peas, bush cucumbers, and pole beans are sprouting. The potatoes are almost ready to be hilled. The only thing we need to plant now is some beets, and corn. It’s already looking like a dry year, I’ve had to water twice and again tonight.

Frost here tonite Jim. Still have not planted my Xmas carrots yet. Could get a chance of frost for two weeks or so yet. The few potatoes that I planted at home are not up yet. But I think they’ve cracked the ground. So should be up within the next week or so. I planted about a two foot row of lettuce about two weeks ago. Right beside the step. When ready. Easy to get for sandwich’s.

Wow Noel we’ve been having cool weather at night but in the 70-80’s during the day. I wanted a box near the back porch for lettuce but I lost that discussion. Guess who has had to walk to get lettuce almost daily…yep me.

Well Jim. I looked this morning and 4 potatoe plants are out. Lettuce beside the step. The one carrot is growing because of being left in the ground since last winter. Same with this potatoe plant.

And my little spot at my sons place. 11 potatoe plants planted there.

Nothing in the big garden at my sons place.
I may grass it over this fall, If nobody uses it.

Carol is wanting to let our gardens lay fallow next year since this will be our 7th year. She’s an almanac country girl. I can’t imagine having to buy everything unless we put enough up for 2 years this year which wouldn’t be too hard to do. We’re still eating several things that were canned in 2021 and still is good.
