Workin' on the Old Tractors

Started digging into the 1942 BO. Pulled the shift cover, starter and crankcase cover, and the upper water pipe. Managed to get the cotter pins pulled from the rod bolts and the nuts loosened off. I think all I need to do now is take all of the nuts holding the block and it should come out. Then I can press the pistons out and see if the bores can be salvaged.

Had some success. Since we got this tractor I have tried to break it loose by putting a piece of flat bar between 2 bolts in the flywheel with no luck even with a cheater bar extension. After loosening the rod caps I tried the short bar again yesterday with no luck. Today I used a cheater extension and It popped one side loose so I rotated it the opposite direction and the other side popped loose. With the bores cleaned up a little more I can see some pitting in one side while the other looks pretty good. Now to decide if we want to finish pulling the block and machine it or try a light hone and run it.

Pulled the cap off the magneto. Looks like I need to pull it apart for a thorough cleaning and then see if it has spark.

I once owned a 1937 B GP. I bought it for $400 from a guy and he said it started and ran good, which it did. Below zero it took very little effort to get it running. Then for some long forgotten reason I had to pull the head and was just sick. You should have seen the pits in the cylinders. That tractor had really been stuck at some point in time and I was sick about it. Then reality hit me! Hey the darn thing runs and starts like a dream why worry about it. Stuck it back together and ran it until someone stopped and bought it from me for twice what I paid for it. No Noises and not oil usage. If they are minor pits or even potholes like mine just run it. Just look at the big pits (ports) in the cylinder walls of any 2 cycle engine! You probably won't put 50 hours on it in the next 10 years.
Oh yah, enjoy the 2 cylinder sound. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. I'd probably still have one it they had had a foot clutch.

When those hand clutch lever got some wear, they could get a bit on the sloppy side. Tricky moving the tractor an inch on way or the other. I remember Dads old D. Used to be his only tractor farming 240A. Was grinding feed one day and it made some awful noise and a couple blue rings out the exhaust and that was the end of it.

Thats kinda what I was thinking to just run it. The big wide rings won't even care about these pits and your right it won't get a lot of run time just going to shows or the occasional tedding job.

Yep, the clutches always have play in them. We bore them out for larger pins or bushing to get them back to standard. Some new clutch discs usually help some also.

Cleaned the points up in the Mag and still no spark. Found some points and condenser for the BO magneto in a tool box. Put the condenser in and now have good spark. It still needs to be cleaned up but its nice to know it works.
