Workin' on the Old Tractors

Last Thursday I got set up to spray the yellow on the hood and grille. I had a 1 gallon unopened can of JD Yellow that I bought last year. Mixed up the paint and began spraying and noticed the paint acting funny and not wanting to cover. Thought maybe I over reduced it and added more yellow to thicken it up. Still didn't act right so I added some more yellow to the point it would hardly spray out of the gun and it still wasn't right. I gave up, shut everything down, and with the heat lamp I got it cured and sanded down smooth late Friday. I made a run to the JD dealer and picked up another quart of Yellow and some new Hardener in case it was the problem. Warmed the shop up today and tried it again with the only change being the new paint. It sprayed just fine and gave good coverage. Now, if I don't find a bunch of runs when I go back out to check it over, I should be able to mask off the yellow in a few days and spray the Green and get this finished up. The owner is getting antsy and I don't blame him.

Is the hardener the very same you used first time? Reason I ask is newer JD paint I was told is synthetic enamel. If you used basic enamel hardener and different the 2nd painting that could have caused it. A paint shop told me he "thinks" acrylic enamel hardener will work with synthetic enamel, but told him just sell me some synthetic enamel hardener so I wouldn't have to worry. I've not sprayed the green yet, but will in the next month or 2. It's an old friend's JD 316. I sprayed all the yellow over a year ago.

Same hardener. Also the same hardener I just used in the Green paint I shot on the fenders and it worked great. Been using this hardener for the last 15 yrs. Its Valspar REN 3001. Now I see the JD dealer has a Sherwin-Williams hardener which I believe owns Valspar now.
