Workin' on the Old Tractors

Good deal on getting it running not that there was any doubt :)
I was beginning to wonder after trying for hours to get the starter working. I thought I had thoroughly cleaned all of the connections and still nothing. Talked to my brother and he told me to check voltage drop and how to do it. Turns out I didn't get the glaze build up on the + battery post and cable clean enough the first time. Really scuffed them up and it works better than it did back when it got parked years ago.

Those aren’t cylinders they’re funnels.
Seriously, a little piston noise never hurt anyone and you’re not going to be working it hard.
Funnels are a good way to describe them. Back when we did this tractor we couldn't find any parts for it so we went with the saying "run whatcha brung". I think there is a place in Missouri that makes new pistons for these tractors.

Pulled the carb off of the John Deere AO. Found some rusty sludge in the bowl and the float has some fuel in it. Not sure if I will try fixing the float or get a new one. The main nozzle and spring needs to be removed for cleaning. Other than that it should clean up pretty easy.

Didn't see any smoke in the video so the funnel cylinders ain't a problem to that old engine!

Made a road trip to the big city today to get some hardener and reducer for the quart of Prairie Gold #2 that I still have and to my surprise its still good. This will go on the MM ZAU fuel tank.

Finished assembling the starter for the John Deere AO. Then started cleaning the carb by running it thru the sonic cleaner. After a quick cleaning I was able to remove the spring and main nozzle.

My brother came over and we worked on the MM ZTU. Drained the coolant and pulled the head off. Then cleaned the head gasket surface so it is ready for another head to be installed. I taped up the opening and got it covered up to keep the rain out if we get some. New gaskets are supposed to be here tomorrow.

I ordered a float and some other carb parts for the JD AO and they should be here tomorrow also. I found 2 splits in the old float. Might be able to solder it up but that will be at another time.

Picked out the replacement head that we are going to use on the MM ZTU. Ran it through the blast cabinet and treated it with Ospho. I'll get it shot with some epoxy primer tomorrow.

My brother came over to work on the MM ZTU this afternoon. We chased all of the threads on the studs and nuts and proceeded to install the head. Its all torqued down now and ready for the carb to be installed. We have to check the fuel tank to see if it needs cleaning and make sure the starting system operates but should be ready for start up soon.

Sure is a different engine configuration on that tractor. Didn't know if I should turn my screen up or down..or side ways..

We got it fired up today. Its running pretty good so I pulled the fuel tank off for cleaning. Spent a few hours adjusting the clutch and trying to get the governor working at low throttle. It works fine from mid throttle on up. The brakes were really dragging so I drove it some holding the brakes on to help clean the rust buildup off of them. Lots of bugs to work out but should be a good show tractor when we get done with it.
