Workin' on the Old Tractors

The rolling work bench was overwhelming so I rolled it to the side and started working on getting the Miller Bobcat welder moving. All 3 tires were flat but took air and seem to be holding. Got it rolled out and I can now see the 3 Datsun engines I mentioned in an earlier post, 2 have transmissions on them and they all turn over. These are the 1200 series engine. They are sitting where the welder used to be parked. I think if I take the welder off of the trailer and put it on a rolling cart it will reduce the foot print by half of what the trailer takes. I won't get rid of the trailer just don't need it taking up the room in the shop.

Cleaned up along the wall where the blast cabinet is going and got it moved into its new home. Up until now this has felt like a checker board with only a couple squares open and every time you make a move something else takes its place. This move seems to have opened up some more floor space.

Moved out to the shipping container to clean up some shelves and floor area. I was able to move 3 stands out of the shop to the container and a few items that went on the shelves. Had 13- 24x48 press board shelves taking up room in the container that went to the wood storage in the hay barn. That helped out a lot. Might have enough room in the container to park the blower tractor in this winter.

My last job on the west coast was a parts manager for a Datsun dealer. Bought a new 73' datsun 510 and moved out here with it. Then bought a 77' datsun little Hustler pickup. Those old Datsuns were just about impossible to kill. Rust was the biggest downfall for them.

I always wanted a Datsun 280z! Love the look of those
From what I remember the 240Z's and the 280Z's were good cars. The 260Z's are the ones to stay away from. They were in the process of redoing their emission systems and the 260's were messed up. The owners didn't like them and neither did the mechanics. Biggest complaint was no power. The people that traded in their 240's for the new 260's were generally disappointed.

A little more progress today and able to see more floor. Another day or two and I should have this opened up enough to get some projects in the door when needed. This area was originally an 18'x50' lean-to and this will get about 30' of it back in use. Planning on bringing the 1942 John Deere BO in to pull the block and get a good look in the transmission. Might put the 1947 Farmall Cub under the bridge crane to get the engine swap done and then its the 1945 John Deere L's turn to finish painting and assembling.

Well Cjet your wife can't ever say you just sit around the house..
The engine swap in the Cub...isn't the motor part of the tractor ? meaning there's no frame rails right ?

No wife here. The girls I hang out with these days are literally a bunch of fat cows. ;) Yes, the cub engine acts as the frame. The original engine has some rust pitted valve seats that need replacing so I pulled a cub engine off of our McCormick combine to install on this cub tractor until I can rebuild the original engine.

I do remember those engines on the old combines. Just never thought too much what they were..

If it was me and the combine engine ran good the other engine would never get rebuilt. Especially with all the projects you have waiting in the wings.

Used the bridge crane to pull the Miller Bobcat welder off of the trailer and set it on a 24" x 48" cart. The trailer measurements were 5' x 8'. That cuts the foot print by more than half. Need to clear out some stuff to roll the trailer out the door now.

The next item to be moved is this old rolling mill. I found an advertisement for this mill in Ranche And Range, Volume 1, Number 27, 7 October 1897. Built in Colfax, WA.

I think I can make a spot for it in the hay barn for now. Its sitting on a pallet truck that needs to go also.

Hauled the rolling mill to the hay barn and started digging into the corner with the 3 Datsun engines. Finding lots of other stuff like sickle bar mower and baler parts. I'm hoping tomorrow I can pull the engines out, sweep up, and roll the welders into that corner. Might be able to bring a tractor in soon.
