I've got 2 Durango's like that. An 01 we've had since '13, has the 360 magnum, ("5.9", I hate metric equivalents) and I just put the trans back in it, had to rebuild it but that one only has 312,000 miles on it ... Body and interior wise it's still in better shape than alot of 10 years newer vehicles running around here....
Then an 03, that one has the motor I've managed to avoid for 20 years, because of the reputation it had for the first 10 years or so it was out ... That being the 4.7, and besides the 03 Durango I also have that engine in my '12, 1/2 ton. Knock on wood so far they've done me alright. I think I got lucky with them and got 2 that were taken care of "right" by past owners...they had a rep as a sludge monster at first and don't like getting hot, they love to drop valve seats when overheated.
We got the 03 when the trans died in the 01 because we needed something to hold 2 car seats...weyre just about to hit 150k on the 03 We've been driving the $h1t out of the 03 since we've had it. It's done us quite well, so far.
I didn't think it would be that long in getting the 01 back going, but being that it's been demoted to the "spare", plus we weren't "without wheels" with it being down/
and between work, and 10 months of hospital and nursing home visits for my mom, then clearing out her house to get sold after she died in August, that one had to sit on the back burner longer than I expected it to. I've had the trans built and ready to go back in since at least last June, but just got the time to slap it back in about a month ago.
We just sold moms house this past Thursday, and also the same day I went to the DMV and the insurance to get it legal again... I've driven it around the country roads a few times close to home before I got plates back on it...
We're keeping 2 Durango's, my son is taking over my 96 Dakota for plow duty on his rental property, we need another vehicle we can haul the grand kids in, can't do that in my Dakota or my 1/2 ton.... As much as I cannot stand 4 door vehicles....
All that said the 360 Durango pulls my camper easier than the 4.7 in the 1/2 ton... Power wise anyway. I put some HD rear leafs on that a few years ago. The 1/2 ton is a little better in the sense of longer wheel base and wider stance.
I now have a set of torsion bars for the hitch, I don't need when towing with the truck but will make towing with the Durango a little better...
Strangely the truck sags more with the camper on the ball than the Durango.
As factory rated they're both equal in tow ratings.
I found out I don't like rear coil springs as well as tried and true leafs for a tow vehicle. The PO did put airbags on the truck which does help a lot.
