1986 JD 316 Repower

I'm about ready to rewire this thing without that brain box. It wouldn't start again yesterday. It's getting fire to the coil and it zapped me good at a plug wire end, but as I let off the key from turning it over. May be the switch, but it's nearly new. Just getting tired of it not starting.

To check the switch put a test light on out bound side of switch and crank it over and see if the
light goes out when cranking check all out bound connections. Or you could try a wire from battery to brain box. hope this helps
thanks Bill

I ran a wire to the coil from the battery and it still wouldn't fire off. I may have to get another switch as it seems to fire just as I let off the starter.

I had that happen once, it was the switch grounding the kill wire in the "run" position. and it may be a safety switch also. Not sure what the brain box is. Sounds complicated.

I'm going towards the ignition switch more each time I try to start it. Today, I cranked it over for a while and it hit on one cylinder as I turned the key to off, rolling the engine a quarter revolution!
I had a 2 amp charge going on it all night, so the battery was fully charged!

Thinking about making up a temp wiring to make sure the engine will start. That will let me know it's in the wiring and not the engine. Something like this:

It's almost an act of god to get to the ignition switch and it's wiring. Have to take the dash bolts out and pry that section back to get in there. No way to get test leads in there.

You could run a wire from battery to a switch but you will need two wires going from the switch one for ignition and one for starter Solenoid. per your diagram you have only hot wire coming to switch& and a wire going to solenoid but you will need a wire going to coil. You do have points on engine and is a Onan? I am in fl for the winter but have a onan manual for my generator. I had a problem it a briggs and it was spark plug looked good when i put new spark plug problem solved.
good luck.

It is an Onan, but no points! I'll run a hot wire to the coil, it's just not shown. But that would verify it's all in the original wiring. No time today to work on it. Gotta get ready for the bad weather for the weekend.

I see you have winter stuff coming in Kenny. We're having some come in too, but not much, or so they seem to think.

Yeah, Daniel! They can't make up their minds about what we'll get. Hope it's not ice! Been doing some 'winterize' things today. Got the wind break on the front porch and took the canopy cover off. Might get to play with the 316 some.
