See, I'm not so old schooled enough to know any different. Dumb social media tells people to avoid lithium do to it being unstable when near water. That is a huge block of misinformation right there. Aside from the cell phone battery part. They can and will burn in a spectacular fashion.
Every article you linked was spraying lithium grease. Aerosol lithium grease would explode or be flammable due to the propellant just like WD 40.
While both lithium grease and lithium batteries contain lithium, the form of lithium used is different; in grease, lithium is typically found as a lithium soap (like lithium stearate) which acts as a thickener for the lubricating oil, while in batteries, lithium is used as a reactive metal within the battery chemistry to store and release electrical charge; essentially, the lithium in grease is not designed to conduct electricity like the lithium in a battery.
The lithium in grease is not going to explode if it comes in contact with water. I really doubt you'd be able to walk into walmart and buy a big ole tub of lithium grease if it was going to act like Gizmo when it comes in contact with water.
Lithium grease is known for its ability to be water resistant and can handle wet applications. Some of our customers request lithium grease in their bearings and such used underground. Wet and dirty applications. I haven’t heard of one catching fire and exploding yet.
So, in a grease it's fine?

It's in a 5-gallon bucket with a pump. I placed a plastic bag over it to keep water away. But I shouldn't worry then?
Back in school, I recall the OKC bombing was diesel fuel and fertilizer that looked like cat litter. So, I've tried to keep those things far away from each other too. I just don't like things going BOOM near me.
