Hill Top adventures

Worked through a light rain today. Miserable muddy jobsite. And the monsoon weather continues, in the 10 day forecast only 7 days have a 50%-80% chance of rain. This cool damp weather sure brings on the aches again. So nothing happened on the hilltop today involving a tractor.
I remember those "rainy mud days"! Definitely not fun!! Do you stick build the roofs or are they trussed?

The rentals that we have been doing this year are all trusses. A few of the big custom homes are all stick frame. The one I was cutting rafters for 4 days straight.
The building I am at now used trusses for the second floor also to get that big open feeling on the 1st floor. I should get a picture of that, it was interesting to see.
 
Last night was our annual trip to watch a garden tractor pull. On the way there, I saw several roads closed and had to detour once. Still closed for flooding since the big storm a week ago. That area has no streams and creeks. So heavy rains just sit in the low areas until it dries up. Makes me thankful there are streams in hood. Got to see the usual mix of straight pipes and customized tractors pulling. One had a snowmobile engine and was being iced down between each pull. Our morning of cutting and hauling wood had a moment of letdown. Front tire no longer holds air and a quarter mile from the shed. JR walked back for wrenches and then I walked a flat tire back to find that air comes out almost as fast as I can put it in. The '75 S-16 has the same size spindle as the '86 Gravely, so one was borrowed and carried back out. JR got 4 loads hauled home giving him some seat time that every lad needs.

And another small pile of locust cut today. Got about 6 of these piles along the edge of the field now.

I checked the tire out this evening after I spent the afternoon mowing. The grass is growing way too fast for September and I am tired of mowing for this summer.It was tubed already and had a nice punched hole in it. A new tube or try to patch this one. And the rear tire switched from a slow leak to a faster leak. Next weekend's plans are to drag a splitter down to the piles and split every thing. That way the bark and dirt won't be in the yard. Then JR can haul. The goal is 2 cords but I haven't figured yet to see how close I am. Wildly guessing just over 1.
 
Lousy wet day at work. At least I got to go home early. So out to the shed to look at the tire sichuashun. Rear tire weather checked dry rotted and flat. A tube will help for the time being I thinks. Except to get the bead broke loose. Nah, it wants to stay exactly where it was for the last decade or two. But the old plank and vehicle trick should do it. The first plank said nope, too much truck. Second board did the trick. Flip the tire and go to back the truck up on it and the brake pedal goes to the floor. Done blew the line going to the rear. That's it, time for a coffee break except I had too much already today. Truck is out of commission, tire not fixed, and frustrated. At least the brake failure happened in the driveway and not on the interstate. Gotta thank the Lord for His blessings.
 
I hear ya on the grass....still like spring as far as mowing. Indeed a blessing the brake line went at home. I've had 2 brake lines rot through, within a few miles from home. One was a 2 ton with 20,000 pounds of shelled corn on it, but I got it home safe by going SLOW and easy! My 97 F250 blew when I left work last year, but driving home was easy & safe by being extremely careful.
 
And the mud bog at work has returned. It was dry enough that the site guys came over and leveled the ruts and ran a roller across it. One rain and one day later we got this.

I remember those days. Main objective was to be in an upright position so the mud stayed on your boots and not on your hind end!! Nothing worse than a butt flop with an arm load of lumber!!!
 
Wednesday was the crane day for us. The driver thought he could get in no problem but he sank deep. Boss man hooked up with the forklift and tried to pull him. The 29,000 pound lift smoked the tires on the blacktop and didn't budge it. Next plan was jack it up with the outriggers and put cribbing down. That worked. Curious, because usually we can move trucks around with our lift, I asked him what his weight was-98,400 sitting on 8 tires. No wonder he sank. Other than that, work was boring backbreaking normal.

Finally got the tire off and once it was off I realized why it was so tough. I had to break off a layer of rust first. Had a nice pile of rust flakes on the floor. Rim was so rough and pitted I didn't think a tube would last a week in it. Flap sander on the grinder made quick work of getting rid of the roughness.
 
So I was slipping a tube into a tire and JR, as he was watching says Dad, didn't this tube get removed cause it leaked? Yup, but it leaks slower than the tire you want to use. And another soggy day at work today. Mud gets deeper and the compaction around the site is disappearing.
 
I like the tire story! I think that would make a great cartoon. Too bad I can't draw. :D Hope the ground firms up for you soon.
 
I hate mud. Built a belt take up in bad bottom. 200 feet long. Rail sections were 10 feet long. Being underground we had to use sheaves to pull them up to the winch. They would disappear under the mud and then reappear on the other side. 2 weeks working in mud up to my knees got real old

The site guys had good compaction when they stoned the road but with all the rain before any blacktop it is starting to get soft in places.

My legs get real painful having wet muddy cold pants against them all day.
