Hill Top adventures

Yesterday started way too early for a Saturday. Left at 5:30 to head over to my brother's farm for the day. 2 hour drive made it a late breakfast when we got there. Most of my family was there for the day and some camped on the farm Fri night. I told the nephews how when dropping a ball from a higher spot spinning it different direction should curve it. And a silo might be high enough to do it.

125' up, challenge accepted.
His farm is tucked into a nice valley with what feels like a decent sized mountain all around.

And I did help in the barn some.

Got back home around 11 last night, tired.
Beautiful farm there...love those big rolling mountains surrounding it! You can keep those tall challenges for yourself, as I don't go higher than my ladders will reach, and sometimes not as high as my extension ladder will go.

I did not climb that silo! This boy likes his feet close to the ground. The average height of silos around here is in the 60-80' range. At 125' his is the biggest around. Sure takes a good blower to get that silage to the top. Other than that, his farm is an average farm. Tie stall barn and upright silos for feed. Not many farmers have a silage trench around here.

Last night we went out to eat to celebrate 15 years since our wedding. Crazy how fast the time is starting to go, but the days get longer all the time. Yesterday's 10 hour shift in the 90* temps felt like 2 days rolled into 1. But we left the boys at a sitter and had a quiet evening of munching.
The other evening JR asked if it is a definite that we are getting this tractor and I said that I think so. He gave a fist pump in the air and a YES! I think he is excited about some true tinkering time coming soon as we dissect this tractor and fix up two others to better shape.

So we decided to spend a weekend camping as a family get away. Every thing went good until a big ol thunderstorm came through and drowned our campfire right before I got to cook supper. According to county dispatch, the other side of the mountain from us got really hammered. Woods fire, wires down, and wind damage. There are a lot of tall skinny oaks around our camp site that really were swaying dropping lots of branches. One dropped about a foot from me. Once the rain finished I got to restart the fire to cook supper.

And the camping is over. Caught a flu bug while away, I feel like they ran me over with the JD compact that was working in the campground. Saturday afternoon they did what they called the wet wagon ride. Cruise around on a wagon with super soakers and soak every one you see. But the flip side was these big campers had garden hoses, water balloons, and buckets to return the water flow.

This week I was trying to get the garden looking like a garden again instead of a disaster. Crazy how fast the weeds can grow. Had a helper to entertain while I worked.0820181921.jpg0820181931.jpg
Grass looks like it needs to be mowed every couple days. But JR isn't that excited about mowing any more. Either tired of it or too many exciting rides down the hill at a much higher rate of speed than his mower was designed for. He thinks that the best way would be bar tread tires and weight, which hopefully will happen next week.

I found a picture of a post card from years gone by. Possibly back around 1920's. The brick building is one that we have spent quite a bit of time remodeling. Originally a cigar factory, it now has music shops on the first floor huge apartments on the second and the third floor has an awesome ball room.

Getting things in place to go collect a tractor tomorrow. Has a 3 point, snow blower and a mower. It has definitely seen some hard use and neglect. But that's ok, it will be taken apart and used to fix two others. The mower deck was taken apart long time ago and is missing a few important parts, but hopefully enough there to fix my deck. And the 48" 2 stage blower will be the finishing touch. Which might be needed if we get the more than normal snow fall this winter.

Got the tractor home and pushed into the shed. Quite the pile of parts. And a snow blower that looks like it could handle a bit of snow once it is freed up. Not bad for sitting a decade in the woods.0825181448.jpg0825181450.jpg

On the way home with this load I had to stop at a local tractor nut to show him. Funny thing was, his father in law had just showed him the ad this morning and they were trying to decide if they want it. We ended up going through his shed and looking at his collection. He is into the NH S-series which is what the Ariens S series started as. His son's comment "this blower is huge" totally describes the difference between a single and a 2 stage blower. Great day of catching up with a guy I hadn't seen in years.

Hopefully this week. A few things jumped ahead of it tho, Friday evening JR tore the drive belt on his rider. And Sat evening I tore the belt on the deck of the Gravely. And the yard wasn't finished mowed. Then Sunday morning Going to church, wife's van kept losing oil pressure every time it idled at a stop sign. Every thing needs fixed.

What I found as I came home tonight. JR decided it was time to switch the ags over to "his" Gravely. Got to love his motivation right now. Mom said he went to it as soon as he got home from school. 0828181807a.jpg

Hot busy week with almost nothing to show for it. What did I do? I don't know. JR has been busy tinkering and dreaming.

3 day weekend starting! Momma made it through the flooded roads safely on her way home. I didn't see any overflowing creeks on my way home from work. Guess I was in a good area for the day doing a tenant fitout in a shopping center.
