What are you currently working on??

I quit that about 25 years ago after I got 5 teeth knocked out taking a drunk out of a bar. Yea I lost some teeth but he got the worse end and went to jail after a stop at the hospital. Then he reimbursed workman's comp for a new set of dentures. Now I clean them myself, don't know about getting all spiffy & buffed though. ;)

Got one snow thrower fixed and ready for snow. Had an odd size woodruff key so had to take an oversize, length and depth and size it down to where it fit tight. I cut about a 3" dia. hole in the side of the steel cover that is welded to the back of the thrower and removed the sprocket that way. Was a lot easier to get at everything. Next project will be the augur sprocket on the International thrower. May work on that tomorrow as I think we will run in to town and eat a pork tenderloin and onion rings, home made style. Last two years in a row this little roadside cafe was rated byt the Iowa Pork Producers as the best Tenderloin in Iowa. We get one order and have them divide it in two as there is no way either of use can eat a whole one.

Got started again on assembly of the original engine from my '72 NH S-14, have been running a 12hp Magnum on it since I got it, this K321 was given to me by the PO partially apart because of it's appetite for oil. Have had it back from the machine shop for several months now and I kinda forgot about it.
This engine had been previously blown up and reassembled with all new, standard parts. The little chip out of the bottom of the bore confirms this. Whoever put this one back together the 1st time obviously didn't Mike anything or take any of it to the machine shop because the crank was 0.013" under spec, too small for even a 10-under rod, had to have it turned to 20-under. The PO never complained about a knock, though it had to have. It can't have been run much after reassembly on that overhaul. I don't remember the crank being scored when I got it.
I had a good rod here left over from another old rebuild, I sent it to the machine shop and they bored it for an insert, I can use it with standard or any undersize that I want to now. The machine shop got me a correct sized 20 under insert.
I have a set of brand new crank bearings here that I was gonna put in my next Kohler rebuild, a 16hp pulled off of a machine that had been thru a fire. But this 14 has been apart so long (since before I got it) that the originals in that one turn roughly and I see rust within them. I hope to have this one back together this weekend. Hopefully the PO gave me all of the parts I need to finish it.

Won't work in the shop today as it is starting out at 7° F and high in the teens'. Guess I will play around with the metal lathe some more, organize some tools, put a shelf in the old TV cabinet I use for the lathe bench. Take a nap or two. Keep the fireplace going later on.

Need to weld up a new agitator for the corn/pellet stove. They are right in the hot fire all the time and the 1/2" rod will burn in two eventually. I make mine out of 5/8" rod, turn the outside end and the drive end where it runs in the fire pot down to 1/2". Get an extra 2-3 months use out of them but still have to weld a 3/4 X 1/2" stub on once in a while. Hard to weld the end of a round rod to the side of a round rod without an end mill.

Still working on the MF8E blade repair. Since the weather has taken a big dump, I'm probably going to put the blade and chains on the MF12G. I better plow snow tomorrow or Monday. I go on call at work Tuesday so I can't plow or do real noisy work in the shop so I can hear that work phone.

Chain sprocket on the augur on the QA42 International snow thrower needed replacing. My back up thrower is working good so time to get the International fixed. Removed the chain, 6 nuts and the augur was laying on the floor. Loaded it in the truck and off to the welding shop. Sprocket was welded to the hub on the inside with the hub welded to the augur. Had to cut the sprocket off the hub from the outside, then cut the welds where the hub was welded to the sprocket. New assembly only this time the sprocket is welded to the hub on the outside. New pair of bearings and brought it home. Will put it together in the morning, clean up a little snow to make sure it all works OK and park it in the shed. Wait till the next one Tuesday evening and another this weekend. Normal season snowfall is 25" ± for this area. So far this season we have 40 +. Sure glad I have the throwers to move it with.

Put the augur with new bearing and sprocket back on the thrower yesterday afternoon. Didn't fall in near as easy as it fell out. Ran a lot quieter now with the new bearings. With four paddles in the center it throws twice as much snow as most other machines do with 2 paddles.

If the sprocket ever needs replacing the weld between the sprocket and hub can be cut and new sprocket welded in place. Won't have to cut the hub out and re-weld and all that again.

Picked up a lower radiator hose heater for my 1512 Cub. Wrong size. Got a 2" which is what the newer model apparently have. Mine has 1-2/3" hose. won't even try to stretch it to 2". Put a single halogen light under the hood, lower the hood on a block of wood. Then covered the hood and opening above the steering wheel with carpeting. Been on there for 24 hours. Check this evening and the top end is nice and warm. Don't know what is costing me but bet it will fire off in the morning.

Worked on the oil furnace for he house last night. Came home and there was a pile of soot floating on the water puddle by downspout.....uhm that's not right. Went downstairs, I must've had a puff back, main exhaust pipe was blown off burn chamber and black soot all over top of furnace. I opened up inspection plates, man, inside is covered with soot. Cleaned out what I could, gotta tear into it more tonight, then my HVAC buddy is coming over to clean nozzle and check the A/F mixture. Ran the wood burner last night to keep house warm.

Got to have a back up heat source in times like this. Is a real pain when any of them go down but worse when your not around to catch it right away. I think my shelled corn is drawing moisture as it is creating a lot more fly ash than it used to. Use to go 3 full days between cleaning, now 2-1/2 is max or it goes out.

Been working on the Mini Lathe I picked up a few weeks back. Had a couple small pieces missing inside the Back Gear speed reduction set up so it would not go to direct drive. Only run in the 5:1 speed reduction and that was to slow and put to much stress on the planetary gear system. Got it figured out what I need no so working on making a 8-32 nut that will fit in a slot to keep it from turning and about 1/4 to 5/16" high to fit in a slot to lock the rotation together. Think I will end up brazing two or 3 nuts together, then machine down tow side to fit the slots. Small pieces so none of the lathe parts guys for this lathe has them.

Or putting in a battery, if you can find it. My Avalanche has the battery right at the left front corner.

I have come to the conclusion, Chrysler engineers are more retarded than Ford engineers...changing a radiator should not be this difficult.
Try a Saturn. Those engineers are really good at getting things into tight corners. Like having to lift an engine to remove an alternator. It was that or remove the radiator.

You haven't worked on a Taurus lately have you? Though I agree that someone had their head stuck somewhere it doesn't belong when they came up with the idea to put the battery where they did. Though those vehicles are newer than anything I own and aren't a truck/ so I won't have to worry about doing that on one of my own vehicles. Though I have changed plenty of those batteries. Over the 20 years that my mom has had her intrepid I have changed that battery 2 or 3 times, and have done my share of batteries on avengers at work.

The vent on the Kubota fuel tank plugged up and the tank collapsed. If it would have stopped there it would have been fine. In one of the creases near the bottom it split. Had another parts tractor on the trees. Do you have any idea how much snow collects in the trees? Took me a good 30 minutes just to get to it and it was below zero out and dark. Tried to pick it up with the loader and it was frozen solid to the ground. Only been setting there for 3 years. Took a 6 ton jack and the loader to get it loose. Pretty much back together tonight.
