And more junk.

We got home about 4pm Mountain time today. We witnessed probably the best dirt track racing we ever saw in all 3 classes! Huge car counts and very little crashing. It wasn't prime weather but we toughed it out again!

The drive back from Sioux Falls today was tiring, with NW wind gusting over 50mph at times and many rain squalls along with it. The rain was blowing across I-90 like ground blizzards. Temps were ranging from the mid 30's to low 50's---LOL!

Definitely parts of the yard are needing mowed!

Good to see you had a pleasant trip ..
So did you get to see Doug Doug????? ;)

Welcome home. Glad you had an enjoyable trip.
Thank you Chris!

I appreciate it Bill! The only bummer of the trip was "young Doug" was coming home from work on Friday afternoon to clean up and head to the track and the transfer case in his Jeep decided to break the chain. Guess that is his only wheels. He lives about 20 miles from his job and then another 20 to the racetrack. Saturday his aunt took him to Kansas City u-pull it yards and no one had one, so they went back south and located one in Springfield in the late afternoon. His aunt lives there so they just stayed the night. He was supposed to be able to get the replacement Monday. Paid an extra 50 bucks to have them pull it. I need to get ahold of him and see if he got it done. Sucks we didn't get to see him again. I missed the info he has of that area's racing!

Was thinking of you drive back with the winds out of the NW we been having. Glad to hear you had a safe and enjoyable trip.
Thanks for the thoughts, Rog! In your area at least it was a tailwind, most all the way to Sioux Falls. Then it switched from South to Northwest, so the battle was I-90 to home.

Sounds like a great time! Glad you had a safe drive.

Thanks, John, is was great racing for sure!

Here are a few pics from the weekend. Just a few of the vintage cars. We rented a golf cart to do a tour of the facility.IMG_2335.JPG

This is "Lake Lucas" for drag boat racing. It is long enough to race Unlimited Hydroplanes!
IMG_2366.JPG

Then we went over to the Off Road racing track. There was a team testing 2 trucks! Only got 1 in this pic.
IMG_2374.JPG

We drove around to watch. He entered the turn pretty low but probably saw us!
IMG_2381.JPG

He caught some air coming back around!
IMG_2385-c.jpg

Then he entered the turn we were at much higher, covering us with the rooster tail---LOL! Pic was just before the dirt bath!

I tried to get a feeling of what 24 open engine late models look like when the green flag is thrown. I need to get a decent camera again rather than using the phone since the old camera crapped out.

It's Loree's birthday and she just got home from work. I better close up and get into the house.

Happy Birthday to Loree, .
I will let her know, Lorna!

Doug, tell Loree Happy Birthday from another last minute tax write off.
Happy belated birthday to you, Jake! It has always been a joke about her birthday being on income tax day! Not funny when you have to pay in like us, but we didn't send them the check until Thursday when we left for our trip!

You snuck up while I was typing replies, Rick---LOL! I will let her know!

Loree has to work late tonight.

While I am replying to Rick, I have a related post.

Had to do the laundry from the trip, then I did some mowing I will cover in the "What did you do with your tractor" thread. After that I lowered the lift to see about those mud or splash guards for the MF12G.

The ones I got on epay are way different. I am now thinking they were homemade. They are the pair on the right. The red ones came from Rick.
IMG_2416.jpg

Guess what? I discovered there IS a stud inside the fender pan complete with a nut! Owned this tractor since 2011 and just now found this out---LOL!
IMG_2414.jpg

There is no way the epay ones can fit inside the fender pan. The seller must have drilled holes and just bolted them on the outside. They are neatly made but not properly made.
IMG_2411.jpg

IMG_2412.jpg

Yes that is a crack in the mower deck beside the weld I did on it several years ago. Repairing that will be on the list to get this old tractor back in the yard mowing.

Glad you are getting something useful out of that box.

Thanks Rick! everything is useful that you sent. Just some stuff may not be needed right away. Already thinking about how to mount one of those gas tanks to the GT5000. That plastic gas tank in it has been killed by uv. I covered the cracked up part with Seal All a couple years ago and it is working. The Seal All itself isn't good in sunlight either though. It's a matter of time before it fails. I'm not paying 2-300 bucks for a used tank like I have seen on epay.

Was cleaning out a bunch of stuff from the old wood shop. Included was a couple or Makita stick type battery chargers that still worked. Yesterday I found 3 Makita drills, 2 standard and one 90°. Two had batteries in them marked good. Now to find the chargers in the junk pile to see if they will still take a charge. Might have to get the loader to stir the pile a bit to find the cords, then the chargers.
I still have my 6 and 9 volt Makita drills with the batteries and charger. They all work but the batteries go dead quick.

That was one group of things I did part with a long time ago. Some kid had an ad on CL that he would come and haul away non working power tools and electronic stuff. I loaded him up pretty good---LOL! Even one of those projector TV's

Glad you had a good time Doug and back safely. Happy belated birthday to Loree. I’m sorry those splash guards didn’t work out especially since I found them for you lol. Glad you got some that’ll work.
No need to apologize, Jim! I didn't know what original ones looked like either! I might find a use for them on something. I will let Loree know!

We were in a food coma after brunch at Loree's church this afternoon. We called our daughter and Loree's mom then she decided to watch a baseball game and our son decided to go home so I headed to the shop. I knew she would be asleep pretty quickly. Got to work on that mowing deck for the MF12G. Cleaned underneath. Decided to just put it on some sawhorses in the shop instead of taking it outside. It is nice out there but windy as usual. Scraped the dried on grass out of it then flipped it over. Ground the crack and welded it. Wire brushed it off and squirted some Ford red engine enamel on it. It's not a bad match but I didn't have any MF red. Deck will need repainted again some day. Not this year.
IMG_2443.jpg

Got to greasing up the spindles and rollers.
IMG_2442.jpg

I need to find some kind of clear hose to stick on the discharge zirk of the spindles so I can pump until there is clean grease coming out. It makes a bad enough mess pumping in till there is a good flow!
IMG_2446.jpg

I drilled the zirk holes in a bad spot too. Nut is right in front of it.

The deflector flap should be good for another mowing season yet.
IMG_2444.jpg

I won't need to lift the tractor to get at the zirks underneath! I will just lower the lift until I can reach them all! Be easy to check the transaxle lube too!

Loree had today off for Easter weekend so we did some running around in town, and took that mini fridge to her office to get it out of my way!
She has to go out of town (Mitchell, SD) for a conference tomorrow and won't be back until Friday. She went to get her nails done after we got home so I headed to the shop.

Did the greasing under the MF12G, checked the gear lube and adjusted the variable pulley spring a little looser. My left knee starts complaining sometimes having to work the clutch. The zirk on the steering box still needs to be reached from on top. Want to look it over better and see about replacing it with a 45 or 90* one. I couldn't get a socket on it from the bottom. Sure like that electric grease gun.

Lowered the lift until I could roll around under it on a office chair. Seemed to help my neck and back.
IMG_2448.jpg

IMG_2447.jpg

Then, I have been meaning to do this for several years. This thing never had grease zirks on the front spindles. I drilled them into the MF1450 a couple years ago, and since the wear on these are minimal it would be good to keep some grease on them to keep them that way. I had been using spray lube on them.

Got them taken apart.IMG_2449.jpg

IMG_2450.jpg

IMG_2451.jpg

Will drill them in tomorrow and look at that steering box zirk replacement.

Seems odd that being a name brand tractor that they scrimped on the zirks. On the other hand how old is it and it;s still going? Still I like the idea of being able to grease things.
Was thinking the same thing. Other than some of the newer stuff you buy today don't know if I ever seen any without them..
Doug is gonna think he has power steering now...!
Were the axle bosses sleeved or something Doug ? You'd almost think it wasn't metal on metal all these years..

This year is this tractor's 50th birthday, Chris. The MF8E has it's 60th birthday this year. The 8E has the zirks. Somewhere in that 10 year span they cheaped out!

The 1978 MF1450 didn't have them either. I added them. The MF12G has always been a nice steering tractor, but maybe it will be nicer now, I will cover the inside of the spindle axle mounts next, Bill!

Most everything any more with zerks are the drive in zerks and I hate those things. Seems like after a time thy pull out with the gun tip.
Hate those too! Expensive to buy an assortment box of them too.
Think I ran into that crappy idea today, Rog and Daniel! Keep reading please.

There are bronze bushings in the axle. I was thinking that the LF was gone!
IMG_2453.jpg

That was because the RF looks like this.
IMG_2454.jpg

The bushing is right up at the top. Maybe MF has the LF bushing lower due to it being the pitman arm mount too?

Stuck the spindle back in and it is nice and tight! Decided that I wasn't going to rethink what was going on.
IMG_2457.jpg

Drilled pilot holes with a 1/8" rivet bit first and then a #2 bit. Positioned the holes so they didn't drill through the bushings. Hole goes into the void between the top and bottom bushings. Tapped the holes 1/4" and screwed in zirks.
IMG_2458.jpg

IMG_2459.jpg

Assembled everything and of course I couldn't find the woodruff key. I'm sure I put it in a magnetic tray but nope! Got one out of the HF key box that fit just right, and finished assembly. Used the hand-saving electric grease gun to fill the spindles and front wheel bearings. Pumped until grease came out of the top and bottom.
IMG_2460.jpg

Then I looked at the steering box zirk to see if a 45 or 90* fitting could make greasing easier. I did get it greased yesterday, but it sucks. I tried sockets and little wrenches. Nothing would grip it. Took a picture of it so I could blow it up bigger and the dang thing has no flats to get a socket or wrench on! It must be one of those ridiculous drive-in ones that Rog and Dan were talking about!
IMG_2461.jpg

That was enough messing with that! Rolled the tractor off the lift. Guess what? I found the lost woodruff key laying on the floor about where that white 5 gal bucket it---LOL!
IMG_2462.jpg

Before the lift was raised, I took the driveshaft off of the MF1450. I want to get rid of the Lovejoy coupling but it still needs to be 2 or 3 pieces to install the dam thing. I still don't really know what factory driveshaft looks like, but obviously they were as crappy of a design as drive in grease zirks. Trying to come up with something that the machinist at my former job can build that doesn't have the Lovejoy wobble. That is tearing up the splines on both units. Trying to buy 11 spline, 3/4" shaft involuted couplings it terrifying how expensive they are!
IMG_2463.jpg

Raised the lift. Will mount the deck back on the 12G tomorrow. Maybe will warm up the engine and put fresh oil in it along with a new air filter. Will be ready to mow then.
