Seems odd that being a name brand tractor that they scrimped on the zirks. On the other hand how old is it and it;s still going? Still I like the idea of being able to grease things..
This year is this tractor's 50th birthday, Chris. The MF8E has it's 60th birthday this year. The 8E has the zirks. Somewhere in that 10 year span they cheaped out!
Was thinking the same thing. Other than some of the newer stuff you buy today don't know if I ever seen any without them..
Doug is gonna think he has power steering now...!
Were the axle bosses sleeved or something Doug ? You'd almost think it wasn't metal on metal all these years..
The 1978 MF1450 didn't have them either. I added them. The MF12G has always been a nice steering tractor, but maybe it will be nicer now, I will cover the inside of the spindle axle mounts next, Bill!
Most everything any more with zerks are the drive in zerks and I hate those things. Seems like after a time thy pull out with the gun tip.
Hate those too! Expensive to buy an assortment box of them too.
Think I ran into that crappy idea today, Rog and Daniel! Keep reading please.
There are bronze bushings in the axle. I was thinking that the LF was gone!
That was because the RF looks like this.
The bushing is right up at the top. Maybe MF has the LF bushing lower due to it being the pitman arm mount too?
Stuck the spindle back in and it is nice and tight! Decided that I wasn't going to rethink what was going on.
Drilled pilot holes with a 1/8" rivet bit first and then a #2 bit. Positioned the holes so they didn't drill through the bushings. Hole goes into the void between the top and bottom bushings. Tapped the holes 1/4" and screwed in zirks.
Assembled everything and of course I couldn't find the woodruff key. I'm sure I put it in a magnetic tray but nope! Got one out of the HF key box that fit just right, and finished assembly. Used the hand-saving electric grease gun to fill the spindles and front wheel bearings. Pumped until grease came out of the top and bottom.
Then I looked at the steering box zirk to see if a 45 or 90* fitting could make greasing easier. I did get it greased yesterday, but it sucks. I tried sockets and little wrenches. Nothing would grip it. Took a picture of it so I could blow it up bigger and the dang thing has no flats to get a socket or wrench on! It must be one of those ridiculous drive-in ones that Rog and Dan were talking about!
That was enough messing with that! Rolled the tractor off the lift. Guess what? I found the lost woodruff key laying on the floor about where that white 5 gal bucket it---LOL!
Before the lift was raised, I took the driveshaft off of the MF1450. I want to get rid of the Lovejoy coupling but it still needs to be 2 or 3 pieces to install the dam thing. I still don't really know what factory driveshaft looks like, but obviously they were as crappy of a design as drive in grease zirks. Trying to come up with something that the machinist at my former job can build that doesn't have the Lovejoy wobble. That is tearing up the splines on both units. Trying to buy 11 spline, 3/4" shaft involuted couplings it terrifying how expensive they are!
Raised the lift. Will mount the deck back on the 12G tomorrow. Maybe will warm up the engine and put fresh oil in it along with a new air filter. Will be ready to mow then.
