What are you currently working on??

Yesterday I run the Stihl line trimmer around the tractor tires we used for raised Strawberry beds. Watered them for an hours after the trimming was done. This morning we put 50 replacement strawberry plants in. Hopefully these will do much better than the last 50 we got. Only about a dozen of them grew. Others never started, some grew up decent then died. Randomly in various tires so wasn't the soil or anything. All the same and watered the same, just bad plants. Got the Dyno back for the d600 in the cub. Bearings went out. Now the amp meter shows discharge all the time when the key is on. Dyno output is good. 12.4 V DC out of the regulator. Wiring all checks good through to the battery. Can't get at anything with the battery in so will have to hook up jumpers with the battery out to trace down where the issue is. Run for 2.5 hours mowing and still going strong so battery is good for sure.
 
12.4 from the regulator is low. That is basic battery voltage. Check voltage across the battery terminals not running then again running. While running the voltage should be at least a volt higher than not running, depending on demand. 1-1/2 to 2 volts is ideal. 3 volts higher while running absolutely max, but us starting to get excessive. Too high and you start cooking the battery.
It don't sound to me with is charging at all.
 
Painted dining room and hall yesterday, only step ladder. Today back to the ext ladder painting the 14-16' vaulted ceilings, not looking forward to that.

Never seen a serpentine belt with ribs on both sides. Man, belt was hard to get on.

Battery voltage don't change. This is not actually an alternator but more like a generator using magnets to generate the electricity. Called a Dynamo". On a Kubot d600 engine. Can buy a new unit cheaper than fix this one if there is any "fix" to it. From what I have found around 12.6 volt from the Dynamo is about normal.
 
Common term used is alternator so going to stick with it. Brought it to the shop this morning. Have continuity through the unit from both wires but don't seems to be charging. Guy that put the bearings in is going to pull it apart and see what gives. Think I will get a new one and have it over with. This on is on its second set of bearings and who knows how many hours as the meter was not functioning when I got the tractor.
 
Those put out AC voltage, usually minimum of 28VAC at full rpm's. Just like stators in common small engines, the voltage regulator/rectifier converts it to DC voltage. Pull the 2 leads from the dynamo, hook to leads of your volt meter set to AC to check while running. If it's putting out 28VAC or higher, then it's either the regulator/rectifier, or a wiring issue.

I've used a GM alternator, but it's so bulky.

Usually they require a special regulator, but then they may work fine with a 15amp regulator/rectifier off a Kohler or Onan. Both systems work the same way with 2 wire stators, but I've never tried this combo. But the Kohler and Onan regs use engine cooling air to cool them, so they'd have to be located accordingly if they did work.

I have used the small after market regulators as replacement on the OPnan and B&S engines with good success. They are small and will tuck in about any place under the hood. I don't know why the Kubota alternator would not work with one of the small aftermarket regulators. 2 wires from alt. to the reg. one wire to the battery.
 
Not working on but HAD worked on. 4 new tires on the van this morning. Found the RR caliper was seized, one pad wore down to metal. One new caliper, 2 rotors and two sets of brake pads. That hurt and wasn't planing on it either. Got the tires at cost which sure helped but made up for it with the rear brake repair. Fronts are good a several K miles yet.
 
Got the decals finaly for the QT16. Will sticvk them on this morning and get some photos of the old girl freshened up good.
 
I should have listened several years ago and re-located the solenoid when doing the original restore on the Roper 20T. Tried to start it yesterday and the solenoid stuck "again". Luckily the battery was low and I was able to dis-connect it in a few minuets. Took 3 hours to dig down to where the solenoid is located. Pulled it and the key switch. Everything tests good. Crap now what. Well I am off to TS to buy some heavy gauge wire and re-locate the solenoid above the battery tray so I can at least get to it to bang on it if it sticks again. What a PITA.

Got tired of seeing all the rust on the 316 seat pan. Backed it under the canopy this morning. It's too hot here to pull the pan off, so I opted to get what I could with my electric DA. Here's some before shots.

Got a coat on this so far. When it cools down some, I can pull the pan and finish it.

Got tired of seeing all the rust on the 316 seat pan. Backed it under the canopy this morning. It's too hot here to pull the pan off, so I opted to get what I could with my electric DA. Here's some before shots.
