What are you currently working on??

Its a nice drizzle rain all morning so far. DW yells out asking, I need you to pick more onions, it turned up short for the salsa, she's canning. So, out I go, grabbed 3 excellent specimens, cleaned them up and brought them in.

Talked with a neighbor friend about the VAWT on mounting the bearings onto the platform. If I had some old carriage wheel hubs, the job would be simple to finish. Instead, improvising to make things fit are on the table right now.

Worked with my moderator on the Yanmar Model Summary List today. Its a spreadsheet covering many makes and models in the brand. 1/2 domestic and 1/2 gray market. Here's a short clip he sent out. We've been at this for 2 years off and on as its time consuming and to be as accurate as possible. Still a bit of blank cells to figure out.

You suck! :p:p:p enjoy, you need the break.

Worked on the Huskee GT a little last night. Once I realized I had to reuse the original spindles, I took the damaged one to work and laid some weld on the worn areas, the Lincoln at work is sooo much better than my Flux core. Brought it home and grinded/sanded it smooth. I also need new wheel bushings on that side, pretty sloppy compared to good side. For spindles, wheels, tie rods all back on and then the thunder/rain came rolling in.

Nice job Marty !

Worked on the new to me Ariens GT16 a bit today,
I finished the transfer of the wiring off the gt19 that's leaving, swapped a different carb into it, while I decide whether it's original walbro might be worth it to try and boil out, (though it runs really good right now on the Kohler/Carter #26 that came from my blown up cub 129/ I have 2-3 more Kohler/Carter 26s that are really good overhaul candidates that I can substitute once I rebuild the 129s engine so this one may stay on the 341..... Looking for a couple of good mufflers to fit these single cylinder Kohler powered Ariens machines
In the meantime I am gonna reweld the end cap (probably braze with the oxyacetylene torch, it's a bit thin for the mig and it has brass on it already.... )
I need one for the new Holland as well.
Now waiting in the stands at the county fair for the demo derby to start.

Got the '06 Denali ready for the 400 mile trip one way to Arvada, CO tomorrow. Checked fluids and air pressures. Cleaned the windows inside and out, steering wheel dash etc and vacuumed the carpet. Had to do my laundry and packed a suitcase for 5-6 days. Most important, got all the damm drugs I have to take together so I don't croak while I'm down there---LOL! I'm going alone. Wife doesn't have enough leave to get off work right now.

Still had a bit of time so I did get the weeds sprayed too. Last time I went to get round up Menard's was out. Bought spectracide instead even though I've never used it before. I had my doubts since it is half the price and has an electric sprayer. Round up electric sprayers suck. I used the spectracide a couple weeks ago with good results, and the sprayer worked way better too. New weeds pop up in the gravel all the time so it does require nea applications from time to time. Thousand bucks on new gravel last fall so I can't let the weeds win!

May not be on much for a while.

Be careful Doug and don’t work too hard listen to your body and have a good trip.

Got the wife to finish up on one of the bus seats. We ended up doing them on the dining room table so she could zip into her sewing room to sew the corner "darts". She even found out that the vintage sewing machine she recently bought worked best for sewing the vinyl. Put the aluminum cover on the back and got it mounted to the seat frame. Now I just need to figure which tractor or sulky it will go on. Also need more vinyl to finish the other one.

Did some more transfer of needed parts from the gt19 to my "new" gt16, changed fluids on the gt16, (I don't think the hydro filter or fluid had ever been changed from new) finished taking all the goodies off the gt19 that I "might ever be able to use" on one of the other 4 Ariens machines, loaded what was left in the bed of my truck along with the ever growing pile of scrap metal behind the house and away it went.

Next up for the gt16 is to put the rear pto, pirated from the gt19, onto it/
gotta pull the gas tank anyway so I can degrease/power wash the thing anyway. So I'll have wide open access at that point to mount the PTO.

Then put the newer front tires from the gt19 on it, the older s16h hood I pulled out of the rafters that's in better shape than what's on it now with the LED headlights I have on the shelf and see if I can get the bind spot out of the trans linkage. This one moves pretty well both directions as it is, pretty well adjusted out compared to some i have had that "fly" one direction and barely crawl the other direction. But they all seem to get that "spot" about 2/3 open where they like to hang up. Some I've been able to correct others I have had to live with.
Still have $0 put out on the new machine, beyond what I pd via eBay plus gas to go get.

I did replace one tie rod, I did buy them new a couple of years ago/for some reason I can't find the RH thread ones I bought then, just the LH ones so far. It needs a RH thread one, along the drag link. So far that and the oil for the engine and hydro and the filter I put onto the hydro are the only things I bought new, "somewhere along the way" that I have had here. The rest was parts off of other machines I have had thru here over the years. The LED headlights are brand new too, been sitting here a few years that is bought from "super bright LEDs" a few years ago. I bought 2-3 sets at one time.
At least those tie rods are cheap. I've bought them a few times over the years, mc master-carr has identical replacements for like $7 ea. Looks like I'm gonna have to order some RH ones in order for the ones I have here already to mysteriously "show up".

Not sure if I want to put the bar treads from the gt19 on this one or the 24x12-12 turfs that I took off the other gt19 I have, when I mounted the tiller onto it for the kid to use. I have a 2nd set of bar treads I put onto that one when I put the tiller on. The ones on the new machine are "alright" I guess, lotsa cracks, they've been tubed by the PO.
That other gt19 is the one with power steering, that I usually blow snow with and just leave the blower on full time.

Be careful Doug and don’t work too hard listen to your body and have a good trip.
Enjoy the trip. Be careful.

Thanks, guys, made it back home about an hour ago. 408 miles, 7 hours. Averaged about 58 mph. 3 nature break stops, 1 for gas and a sandwich.
Sister is doing ok now long as she doesn't over do it too. I didn't add up the scary part-the gas receipts yet---LOL! That old Denali does get decent milage for what it is though. 16-19 on these kind of road trips.

Saturday was a bad day...

My life long time friend Mike, passed away from a year long battle cancer. I had no mind to do much of anything yesterday, but had no choice.

About 2 weeks ago my reserve water tank ran empty of water, the shallow well pump ran that is got super hot. After refilling tank, pump would not build pressure. I bought rebuild kit ($100 and week wait), did that Friday night. Got up Sat, the 1/8" water line to switch was leaking, had to go get a fitting for that. Got that fixed, still no pressure, what the...??? I tried everything then drained the tank,
(I also scrubbed and wet vac'd out all the rust and sediment from well). I removed the piping from tank and pump and learned it had gotten so hot, the PVC check valve had swelled enough from heat it was stuck shut starving pump. Had I checked that first, I would have saved time, money and headaches. Beautiful 80* , low humidity day outside and I spent it in the basement :(

Sorry to hear about your friend, that can be hard to deal with. I know the feeling. That must have gotten real hot to melt that valve. When I replaced my cistern pump I hated to do it but I bought a brass check valve on a 1” copper line, very expensive. Glad you got things up and running.

A few months ago when we sold my grandparents house, my moms boss bought their old Husqvarna. He just bought a house with a bigger yard, and needed a riding mower. Let’s just say people like him are the reason why these tractors have so many safeties. Last week he sent me a picture and asked why it wasn’t cutting right. I went and looked at it and found this: 707BA600-21B0-4128-8327-984630EBC157.jpeg
I asked if he hit a rock or anything, he said he didn’t think so. Yea, I’m sure it got bent while it was just sitting in the shed. I got a set of blades and went over last night to put them on. I noticed he also cracked the spindle, so I have to get one of them too. After I was done, his wife came out to see what the problem was. She asked him if that was from when he hit the edge of the sidewalk. I looked and there was a chunk missing from the corner of the step. That will definitely do it.

I guess my next job will be my neighbors Troy-Built. He called me last night and said it just stopped moving. He thinks the drive belt broke. I have to go look at that after work today.

Some people should just sit and watch tv. My son just bought his first home about 6 months ago. Like me he loves people and enjoys watching them. His neighbor just moved in next door about four months ago. He has torn up 2 LT’s one push mower and recently a like new Zero turn. He got the ZT stuck 3 times and hit something the other day that killed the engine and now won’t start. He had his friend come over to pick it up and that in itself was a nightmare to watch. My son said the guy tried backing his truck with a trailer up the hill, got the truck stuck, Jack knifed the trailer and tore the yard up. My son went out to help him and finally got him on his way. My son said dad why didn’t he just disengage the mower and coast it down the hill and simply load it into the trailer. I simply said stupidity. What was funny the guy picking it up told my son he had been working on mowers for 37 years

About 2 weeks after he bought this, he called me and said he “changed” the oil, and now the tractor was smoking, and when he turned on the blades it would bog down. I got there and he had the oil way overfilled. The oil change light was flashing because it was right around 500 hours. He thought it meant the oil was low so he dumped a quart in. Luckily I got that straightened out before he ruined the motor. I showed him how to properly check the oil, and told him to do it before each use, but I doubt he has ever done it. And he also had a rubber dog toy stuck between the blades which is why it was bogging down. It was at that point I realized it may have been a mistake selling this to him. Some people are better off hiring someone to do it. This was a nice tractor, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until he completely destroys it.

I bent a blade on my ZT when I went over a board I had in the yard so I could get to my shed when it was wet and muddy. I have noticed the blades are a lot heavier on the tractor decks.
Depends on what ZT you have. The commercial ones definitely have some heavy duty blades!
Then again I've seen blades on newer homeowner duty push mowers bend and also have seen them snap off.
The ones that bend seem to do so easier than a coat hanger.
