Today I got my truck frame painted. It's been at my son's house since I had it blasted and primed, been wanting to get out there and do this for at least a month. Either we have had something else going, or it was too windy, something.
I painted with an HVLP type of gun for the first time.
I know I didn't have the gun set right, but it worked. I was a little Leary about it going in but it worked. Came out good.
I ran the paint that Sherwin Williams recommended over the particular primer that was used, and damn it was expensive.
Off the street it's over $500 a gallon with the quart of hardener. I got it for a lil over half price thanks to a neighbor who uses to work for them.
I wish I'd of had him get the recommended thinner for me at the same time.
I went and got that, it's "only" $60/gallon. I bought 2, used less than a half of one, wonder if they'll take the 2nd unused gallon back...
That paint went a long way. Don't know if it's because of being "high solids" or if it was the type of paint gun I used
I mixed just a quart in a gallon ish plastic bucket, to start with, added the 8 oz of "part B" and the recommended 15% by volume of thinner. So 46 oz total of paint, when added together. I went and went and went some more before I ran out. I almost had enough with that, I mixed another 8 oz of paint plus part B and thinner and that got me done. I sure wouldn't have thought that.
I'm glad I didn't just mix up the whole gallon to start off with or the remainder would be scrap right now.
I did miss one small spot that got overlooked, (the bottom of 1 cross member) I'll get that once it dries and I get it home
I set it on 2 sawhorses (surprised they held)! My son was able to barely pick up one end at a time for me to set a horse under, with his Kubota
He's on 2+ acres, has an acre on each side of the house.
I set it in the middle of one of those acres and had plenty of room around me to allow for any over spray/ of which I had surprisingly little.
I brought the old Binks #7 with me as a backup just in case.
150' from the compressor in the garage. It took 3, 50' hoses coupled together to reach my work area.... Those rear springs, and all the ball joints, tie rods, sleeves, bushings and brake parts are sitting here waiting to go on once I get it home.
